Provided is a lithium ion battery including a battery can, a battery core received in the battery can, electrolyte filled in the battery can, and a battery cover assembled to the battery can. The battery can or the battery cover is provided with a pressure relief valve, and the pressure relief valve is coupled with a mesh cover defining a number of through holes therein. According to the present invention, when thermal runaway occurs to the lithium ion battery, the pressure relief valve breaks timely. Only gases and electrolyte vapor can pass through the mesh cover. Solid particles cannot pass through the mesh cover. Therefore, ignition of the flammable gases, the electrolyte vapor and the high temperature solid particles in the surrounding air afar from the pressure relief valve is avoided and the safety performance of the lithium ion battery can be improved remarkably.

A battery module , comprising:a plurality of battery sub-packing units each including at least one battery cell and a case in which the at least one battery cell is accommodated; anda body frame unit in which the plurality of battery sub-packing units are installed, the body frame unit surrounding the plurality of battery sub-packing units,wherein the case includes a sub vent hole for allowing communication between an exterior of the case and an interior of the case in which the at least one battery cell is disposed.2. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the case comprisesan end panel disposed at front and rear portions of the battery cell including an electrode tab of the battery cell, fastened such that the electrode tab extends externally, and having the sub vent hole formed in a lower end portion thereof; anda surrounding cover configured to surround at least a portion of an outer surface of the battery cell, along an edge of the end panel, the end panel being coupled to both end portions of the surrounding cover.3. This invention is a vent valve suitable for an electric storage battery in which a movable valve member 16 co-operating with a valve seat 14 is caused to move by being attached to or integral with a rubber annulus 19 one side of which is exposed to ambient pressure while the other side is exposed to the pressure within the battery. The area of the annulus 19 is substantial compared with the size of the valve member so that a small pressure difference across it can be sufficient to open the vent. Alternatively (Fig. 7) a corrugated annulus 19 may be provided which forms a seal with a post 42 depending from a closure 23. Motion of the annulus under influence of pressure causes the inner edge to encounter recesses 43, allowing escape of gas past the annulus.
