An airplane fuel level optical sensor using one side-emitting plastic optical fiber (SPOF) and two fluorescent plastic optical fibers (FPOFs) to detect the airplane fuel level without using any electrically conductive component or element placed inside the fuel tank. This dual-FPOF sensor is capable of achieving high resolution and high accuracy with a one-time calibration in the actual airplane's fuel tank environment. One embodiment of the dual-FPOF sensor uses one SPOF and two FPOFs to detect fuel level change based on the optical signal output from the two FPOFs. The sensor design uses large-diameter (core and cladding), lightweight, low-cost and high-durability plastic optical fiber, which is very desirable for airplane installation.

A spacer-damper for maintaining the spacing between electrical transmission conductors or the like and for damping any vibratory motion of such conductors includes a rigid spacer in the form of a multi-sided frame having at least two spherical mounts for conductor clamps. The clamps are connected to the spherical mounts, but separated therefrom by a resilient damping covering on the spherical mounts. Indentations on the spherical mounts and on the clamps mate with protrusions on inner and outer surfaces of the resilient damping covering to inhibit relative movement therebetween. Longitudinal, transverse and vertical vibrations in the conductors held by the clamps are damped by shear forces which arise within the resilient damping material, longitudinal vibrations being parallel to the ground axially along the length of the conductors, transverse vibrations being parallel to the ground but perpendicular to the conductors, and vertical vibrations being perpendicular to the ground.

This overhead cable support can use the neutral cable (8), strung between pylons, as a support wire. It has a hook (16) so that it can hang at intervals along the support wire. Its vertical body has arms with hooks at the extremities to locate the other conductors. These are held in place by plastic loops secured in notches in the arms. The supports are suitable for bare cables at voltages up to 1Kv. They are economic, prevent cable oscillation and reduce the overall load on pylons.

A B S T R A C T A spacing device for spacing individual conductors of an overhead transmission line includes a hub having at least two cavities each opening onto the hub periphery. Each cavity has an associated arm with a conductor clamp at one end and a knob at or adjacent the other end, the knob being received with clearance within a respective cavity to permit limited articulation of each arm with respect to the hub. An elastomeric bush substantially encircles the arm in the clearance gap between the knob and the cavity wall, and the cross-sectional shape of the bush on opposing sides of a maximum diameter portion of the knob is deformed by compression during assembly of the device such that each half of the bush has a greater degree of pre-compression at the centre of its cross-section that at the ends of its cross-section.

A spacer for bundled conductors comprises two or more rings, each carrying an arm which terminates in a conductor clamp, the rings being resiliently maintained in axial alignment and restrained from axial rotation relative to each other, the axes of the clamps being parallel to one another but at right angles to the axis of the rings. As shown, a spacer for a cable having three component conductors comprises three rings 1, 2, 3 spaced apart by neoprene washers 7 and 8 mounted on a spindle 4 which also carries end-plates 9 and 10 spaced from rings 1 and 3 by neoprene washers 11 and 12. Projecting from the rings are arms 13, 14, 15 carrying conductor clamps 16, 17, 18. The friction grip between the neoprene washers and the rings is such that any relative rotation of the rings about the spindle 4 is accommodated by distortion of the washers. Since a small clearance is left around the spindle slight movement in a plane containing the arm and the spindle axis is permitted, this again is accommodated by distortion of the washers. Any movement perpendicular to the conductor is limited by bell-mouthing each end of the clamp, 19, 20 (Fig. 2, not shown), or by providing a layer of resilient material between the conductor and the embracing wall of the clamp. Ina further embodiment the spindle may have a sleeve or covering of resilient material, each ring being secured to this resilient sleeve by bonding, cementing, friction, or by making the spindle and ring of non-circular cross-section. To produce a good friction grip between the ring and the resilient sleeve each ring may be split diametrically or radially into two or more parts which are screwed together. An airplane fuel level optical sensor using one side-emitting plastic optical fiber (SPOF) and two fluorescent plastic optical fibers (FPOFs) to detect the airplane fuel level without using any electrically conductive component or element placed inside the fuel tank. This dual-FPOF sensor is capable of achieving high resolution and high accuracy with a one-time calibration in the actual airplane's fuel tank environment. One embodiment of the dual-FPOF sensor uses one SPOF and two FPOFs to detect fuel level change based on the optical signal output from the two FPOFs. The sensor design uses large-diameter (core and cladding), lightweight, low-cost and high-durability plastic optical fiber, which is very desirable for airplane installation.

Abstract of the Disclosure A damping spacer for overhead conductors comprises at least two rigid spacing arms, with each arm having means for clamping the arms to respective conductors. Each arm is provided with an integral hub structure for holding a composite elastomer damping element, the hub structures and damping element being mechanically held together by a pin means extending through the hub structures and damping element. The damping element is comprised of an inner structure made of a relatively soft elas-tomer material and an outer structure made of a relatively hard elastomer material. The soft elastomer is effective to dampen low amplitude, high frequency aeolian vibration, while the rela-tively hard elastomer is effective to dampen high energy, wake-induced oscillations in a conductor bundle. The hard material also serves as a stop mechanism to limit relative motion of the arms and hub structures. This provides protection for the soft elastomer and prevents clashing of the metal parts of the spacer.
