A multiwire branch circuit including two line conductors and a grounded, common neutral conductor is protected by a two pole circuit breaker connected to interrupt current flow in the two ungrounded line conductors. Three separate protection circuits provide arc fault protection for each of the ungrou nded line-conductors and ground fault protection for all three conductors. The arc fa ult delectors use the bimetal of the thermal-magnetic trip device for the associated line cond uctor, and therefore, are individually referenced to the associated line voltage. Hence , the outputs of the arc fault detectors are electrically isolated from each other and from the output of the ground fault detector, but operate a common trip circuit to open t he two pole circuit breaker. The arc fault detectors have separate isolated power suppl ies. The ground fault detector is powered by a supply which is energized if either of the ungrounded line conductors is energized.

An arc fault detector comprised as a stand alone unit and in combination with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) functions to provide protection from potentially dangerous arc fault conditions. When combined with a GFCI, the combination arc fault/ground fault circuit interrupter (AFCI/GFCI) provides protection from both arc fault and ground fault conditions. A single transformer is used to detect faults between neutral and ground and arc faults. An impedance splits the current flow into two portions so as to generate differential current proportional to the current flowing through the conductors. An early arcing detector periodically tests the AC line for high impedance between the device and a main breaker panel. The AFCI/GFCI device detects both AC line frequencies and high frequencies associated with arcing. Both average and instantaneous values of both AC line frequency and high frequency arcing signals are processed to generate an arc fault signal. The device allows the arc detector to differentiate between destructive high level arcing and low level arcing such as generated by typical household appliances and equipment. This serves to decrease the occurrence of false tripping. The device also includes a timer circuit, which permits the user to temporarily disable the arc detector, and includes communication means to permit the device to communicate the occurrence and location of the arc fault to a centralized monitoring station.

The relay includes means for obtaining current and voltage samples on the power transmission line for a particular possible fault type. The current sample is multiplied by the replica impedance of the power transmission line, while the voltage sample is multiplied by a polarizing voltage to provide a first complex expression having a real portion and an imaginary portion. The product of the current sample and the replica impedance is multiplied by the polarizing voltage to produce a second complex expression having a real portion and an imaginary portion. The real portion of the first complex expression is then divided by the real portion of the second complex expression to produce a scale value m which is compared against known reference scale values for each zone, so as to determine underimpedance conditions in any one of the zones.

A novel toroidal core current sensor for an AFCI/GFCI Circuit Breaker and a test circuit configuration based thereon is disclosed. The current sensor has a plurality of load current conductors extending therethrough. One of the conductors carrying a load current has a portion of the load current shunted outside the core through a shunt conductor which is connected in parallel with one of the load current conductors. The secondary of the transformer outputs a current value proportional to and substantially less than the load current which may be, for example, detected by a control circuit which compares the current value against predetermined stored criteria and operates a circuit breaker accordingly. In the test circuit a power source and a waveform generator are provided for operating an AFCI\GFCI circuit breaker having the shunted current sensor and injecting test signals into a terminal of the circuit breaker. The unique properties of the shunted current sensor permit a wide range of fault conditions to be applied at low signal power because of the relatively high sensitivity the shunted current sensor provides to the AFCI\GFCI circuit breaker.

A circuit breaker includes separable contacts for movement between a closed position and an open position. An operating mechanism, which moves the separable contacts between the closed and open positions, has a closed state and an open or tripped state which corresponds to the open position. A current transformer senses electrical current flowing through the separable contacts as a sensed current. A trip mechanism employs the sensed current for tripping the operating mechanism to the tripped position to move the separable contacts to the open position. The trip mechanism includes a microprocessor which generates short delay and ground fault trip functions of electrical current and time. The microprocessor inputs a first interlock signal from a downstream electrical switching device which generates the first interlock signal with a first value when current through the downstream device exceeds a predetermined value and with a second value otherwise. The microprocessor generates and outputs a second interlock signal to an upstream electrical switching device in response to both of the first and second trip functions. The trip mechanism selectively trips the operating mechanism as a function of the first interlock signal, the first trip function, and the second trip function.

An arc fault detector comprised as a stand alone unit and in combination with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) functions to provide protection from potentially dangerous arc fault conditions. When combined with a GFCI, the combination arc fault/ground fault circuit interrupter (AFCI/GFCI) provides protection from both arc fault and ground fault conditions. A single transformer is used to detect faults between neutral and ground and arc faults. An impedance splits the current flow into two portions so as to generate differential current proportional to the current flowing through the conductors. An early arcing detector periodically tests the AC line for high impedance between the device and a main breaker panel. The AFCI/GFCI device detects both AC line frequencies and high frequencies associated with arcing. Both average and instantaneous values of both AC line frequency and high frequency arcing signals are processed to generate an arc fault signal. The device allows the arc detector to differentiate between destructive high level arcing and low level arcing such as generated by typical household appliances and equipment. This serves to decrease the occurrence of false tripping. The device also includes a timer circuit, which permits the user to temporarily disable the arc detector, and includes communication means to permit the device to communicate the occurrence and location of the arc fault to a centralized monitoring station.

[Also in Group XL (c)] An undervoltage protective arrangement comprises means connected to each phase of a polyphase system for providing a signal voltage when the corresponding phase voltage is above a predetermined value, and transistor means controlled by the signal voltages for providing an output signal in the absence of any one of the signal voltages. In Fig. 1 there is connected to each phase voltage-dividing resistors 2, 3, a rectifier 4 and a potentiometer 5, and the resulting unidirectional voltage signals normally bias rectifiers 7 to their non-conducting condition so that the bias applied to the base of a transistor 11 from a source 8 causes the transistor to conduct. Under these conditions no voltage is applied across a capacitor 13. If the voltage of any phase falls below the predetermined value, the corresponding rectifier 7 is " unblocked " so that current can flow from the source 8 through the rectifier to earth causing the transistor to become non-conductive. The resulting output signal appearing at the collector of the transistor charges the capacitor 13 until the breakdown voltage of a Zener diode 14 is reached and a control device 15 is then operated. The device 15 may be a relay, a flip-flop circuit or an amplifier. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a modified circuit in which a transistor is associated with each phase.
