Solar irradiance, the energy from the Sun's electromagnetic radiation, has a wide range of applications from meteorology to agronomy to solar power. Solar irradiance is primarily determined by a location's spatial relationship with the Sun and the atmospheric conditions that impact the transmission of the radiation. The spatial relationship between the Sun and a location on Earth is determined by established astronomical formulas. The impact of atmospheric conditions may be estimated via proxy using pixels from satellite imagery. While satellite-based irradiance estimation has proven effective, availability of the input data can be limited and the resolution is often incapable of capturing local weather phenomena. Brief qualitative descriptions of general atmospheric conditions are widely available from internet weather services at higher granularity than satellite imagery. This methodology provides logic for quantifying the impact of qualitative weather observations upon solar irradiance, and the integration of this methodology into solar irradiance estimation models.

Electrical circuit control techniques in power systems are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a supervisory computer in the power system can be configured to fit phasor measurement data from phasor measurement units into a Gaussian distribution with a corresponding Gaussian confidence level. When the Gaussian confidence level of the fitted Gaussian distribution is above a Gaussian confidence threshold, the supervisory computer can be configured to perform an ambient analysis on the received phasor measurement data to determine an operating characteristic of the power system. The supervisory computer can then automatically applying at least one electrical circuit control action to the power system in response to the determined operating characteristic.

The technology is generally directed towards characterizing primary frequency response parameters (e.g., frequency response coefficient, inertia, damping, droop) for an interconnection, region, and power plant utilizing phasor measure unit (PMU) data captured during an event (e.g., a generation trip event) that causes an imbalance in the power grid system. Pre-processing of localized PMU based frequency measurements combined with system identification techniques fit the observed frequency response to estimate parameters such as system inertia, frequency response coefficient, turbine time constant, system damping and governor droop that characterize the interconnection-wide frequency response. 1. A method , comprising:detecting, by a system comprising a processor, a change in power in a power grid system that changes a frequency associated with the power grid system; and establishing, based on measurement data associated with the power grid, a boundary region for a frequency response of the power grid system; and', 'varying at least one transfer function parameter value of a transfer function that relates the change in power to the change in frequency until the frequency response is within the boundary region., 'in response to the detecting the change in power2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising claim 1 , determining a system response value of the power grid system based on the measurement data claim 1 , and using the system response value to obtain transfer function parameter values of the transfer function.3.
