A frequency of an AC voltage of an AC grid present at a genset is defined by an UPS. The frequency is altered in one direction away from a desired frequency, if a power demand increases beyond a power supply in the AC grid, and in the other direction, if the power demand falls below the power supply. An alteration of the frequency in the one direction is limited to a maximum value in that missing power is temporarily fed out of an energy storage of the UPS into the AC grid. A shift of the frequency in the one direction is kept until no more power flows out of the energy storage. The genset responds to deviations of the frequency of the AC voltage from the desired frequency in the one and the other direction by an increase and a decrease of supplied genset power, respectively.

The remote controller (14) thereafter sends a correction signal to each load controller (10), which causes the respective load controller (10) to apply a correction to its responsive load service by way of an offset to its power consumption adjustments.

An energy management method for controlling electrical power consumption in each of a plurality of residential circuits having a plurality of loads. Each residential circuit is provided with a variable limit demand controller which includes means for receiving utility-generated demand limit signals from a remote location. A demand limit is established for each of the residential circuits which is independent of which of the specific loads in the circuit are responsible for the demand. Signals are generated by the utility from a remote location to vary the limit proportionately in all of the residential circuits. In a preferred embodiment, in which the loads in each of the circuits include both resistive and reactive loads, each circuit is provided with separate variable limit demand controllers for the resistive loads and for the reactive loads. Separate demand limits are established for each of the residential circuits and utility-generated signals are sent from a remote location to each of the demand controllers to vary the resistive and reactive limits proportionately in all of the residential circuits. The resistive and reactive demand limits are adjustably varied to improve the power factor of the load on the utility power-generating facilities.

A device to control a genset engine may use multiple feedback loops to provide a fast stable response to load changes. An outer feedback loop may receive frequency measurements and power measurements of a genset engine and determine a dispatch adjustment comprising a frequency setpoint based on the frequency measurements and power measurements. A middle feedback loop may comprise a double deadband droop filter that periodically generates a pulse based on the frequency setpoint and the power measurements. The middle feedback loop may update an inner loop setpoint based on the pulse. An inner feedback loop may alter a target fuel valve reference of the genset engine based on the inner loop setpoint generated by the second controller and a fuel valve droop.

A fault isolating device for use in a microgrid disconnected from a main power grid includes a voltage meter for detecting a voltage anomaly indicative of an electrical fault, a timer for establishing a time window that begins and ends a predetermined time after a voltage anomaly is detected, a switch that is opened at the start of the time window, and a microcontroller that determines whether to leave the switch open to isolate a faulted portion of the microgrid or to close the switch. A plurality of fault isolating devices can be distributed throughout a microgrid to isolate a faulted branch or faulted branches of an islanded microgrid without interfering with normal fuse operation when the microgrid is connected to the main power grid.
