The invention is carried out by providing an adjustable frequency power supply connected to an alternating current induction motor which is rotated at speeds in excess of 60 hertz. A plurality of sequential frequency ranges are selected which, together, comprise a total frequency range from a maximum frequency range in excess of 60 hertz to 60 hertz which is applied to the motor. For each frequency range, a maximum breakdown torque of the motor is determined. When it is desired to decrease the speed of the motor, it is decelerated sequentially through each frequency range at a different deceleration rate for each range such that the maximum breakdown torque of the motor within each frequency range is not exceeded. Each different deceleration rate for each frequency range is determined by selecting the minimum period of time, for each frequency range, during which the motor may be decelerated without exceeding the maximum breakdown torque of the motor within that frequency range. Also, the deceleration rate for each frequency range may be selected by determining the deceleration rate of the motor at the highest frequency in each range which will not result in exceeding of the maximum breakdown torque of the motor. The motor is then decelerated within each range at the deceleration rate of the highest frequency in the range.

In the acceleration range, the switching number is relatively large and hence a sufficient driving torque is applied to the rotor. The invention relates to a load dump for example for connection to a dynamic brake resistor and is especially useful when several motor drives and motors are operating together, are interconnected in one system. A load dump for connection to a load includes: an energy sink and a controller. The controller actuates a switch to divert current to the energy sink when a threshold is exceeded so as to dissipate excess energy in the sink. The load dump, at switch on, is at a voltage that is intermediate a voltage source and the load. An advantage of this is that when necessary energy is dissipated at a very rapid rate independent of mains supply voltage.

The motor speed control includes a tachometer generator coupled mechanically to the motor, the supply to the motor being varied by the output from an amplifier receiving the tachometer output. The design provides automatic braking if the coupling to the tachometer fails and smooth step free starting. Output from the tachometer generator is integrated in two RC circuits isolated by an amplifier stage. Enhanced network power factor corrective designs are presented that can use corrective devices that achieve long-term, operationally stable mechanical work. Embodiments can utilize reverse-winding induction motor designs with engineerable parameters and configurations for the reverse winding (13) in systems and through methods where an inductive motor (1) can present a current that leads voltage and a leading power factor (16) to correct other existing induction motors (8) in an initial network (9) or be optimized for a particular application. Designs also present a power factor correction that can present a variable correction without altering the character or physical capacitive value of an electrical correction component. Individual induction motors that have leading current and a leading power factor (16) can be provided to improve reverse winding induction motors. Progressive start controls (23) can also be used in a manner that limits inrush current to operational levels with passive current establishment control where reverse winding (13) effects can be used and perhaps even delayed to passively limit and even effect a current decrease while rotational acceleration continues after initial start transition.

A system and method for improving transient speed response of electric motors includes a comparator that determines a difference between a current reference and an adjusted current reference generated by the electric motor drive system, and an integrator the receives and integrates the difference between the current reference and the adjusted current reference over time to yield total accumulated lost current-seconds, and outputs at least a portion of the integrated difference between the current reference and the adjusted current reference as current-seconds to be added to the current reference. The present invention keeps track of the total accumulated loss-seconds due to current rate limitations, and restores the total accumulated lost current-seconds to the system when current becomes available.
