Some embodiments of the present disclosure relate to transmission techniques that result in power savings relative to previous solutions. These techniques often transmit a signal-of-interest by using two paths, namely, a transmission path (which includes a power amplifier) and a control path. The signal-of-interest is evaluated in “fast-track” fashion on the control path, such that the control path can “tune” a DC supply signal provided to the power amplifier. Thus, when a delayed version of the signal-of-interest is provided over the transmission path to the power amplifier, the DC supply signal provided to the power amplifier helps ensure that the power amplifier has “just enough” DC supply to ensure reliable operation without dissipating excess power. In this way, the techniques disclosed herein help to reduce power consumption in transmitters, thereby potentially helping to extend battery life and reduce undesired heating for users.

Control circuitry can adjust the transceiver circuitry based on the measurements of output power and can adjust the adjustable power amplifier bias voltage in real time to select an optimum power amplifier bias voltage based on the current cellular telephone standard, modulation scheme, power amplifier gain state, and operating frequency in use.

An actual linear amplifier distorts an input signal, such as an RF signal, and generates third order intermodulation (IM3) products. In an embodiment of a Class A amplifier, the linear amplifier is a bipolar, common emitter-configured (CE) transistor using a cascode transistor to provide a fixed collector bias voltage to the CE transistor. The CE transistor has a transconductance vs. base-emitter voltage (V BE ) characteristic which, when plotted, shows a transconductance that increases with an increasing V BE to a maximum, then drops, then tapers off, wherein there is an inflection point between the maximum transconductance and where the transconductance tapers off. A DC bias circuit provides a DC bias voltage to the base of the CE transistor that causes the CE transistor's operating point to track the inflection point over a range of temperatures. This operating point causes the IM3 products to be greatly reduced.

The feedback circuit controls a control voltage at the control electrode, so as to equalize an offset current and a difference between main currents flowing through the current channel of the reference transistor or reference transistors ( 120 a - b, 30 ), obtained with and without a small voltage offset added to the control voltage. The main currents flowing with and without a small voltage offset may be obtained by using a first and second reference transistor ( 122 a,b ), matching each other and an offset voltage source ( 126 ) coupled between the control electrodes of the first and second reference transistor ( 122 a,b ), to apply the small voltage offset between their control electrodes.

The transistors coupled in the cascode configuration may be fabricated using gallium nitride (GaN) technology to reduce physical size of the DA and to further reduce noise.

To set the quiescent operating level of the RF output signal, a bias signal to be applied to the RF input signal is received prior to amplifying the RF input signal. The bias signal is amplified to generate the RF output signal at the quiescent operating level and a feedback signal is received that is indicative of the quiescent operating level of the RF output signal. Prior to amplifying the RF input signal, the bias signal level of the bias signal is adjusted such that the quiescent operating level is set to a reference signal level based on the feedback signal level. This allows for adjustments to be made to the quiescent operating level and maintain the quiescent operating level at a desired value.
