A system and method for detecting power line null frequencies and for adjusting the transmit frequency and transmit power to maximize the reliability and efficiency of the AC power line transmission link. The system includes a programmable logic device (102) in the transmitter, which receives information (101) and generatesa control signal (103) which controls the gain of amplifier (109) and provides a PPL control signal (104) for directing the Phase Locked Loop (105) in its selection of multiple frequencies for transmission to a receiver. A receiver detects and records the bit error rate and/or the received noise per frequency and communicates this information to the transmitter. When all desired frequencies have been transmitted and tested, the optimal frequency is identified or selected. Generally, the optimal frequency is the frequency requiring the lowest transmit power while maintaining an acceptable bit error rate or an acceptable noise level.

The system further comprises a pulse receiver including first means for counting pulses in the selected portion and second means for counting pulses in another portion of each full cycle. The two counts are compared (one is subtracted from the other) over a plurality of full cycles to produce a net pulse count. Since the noise signals appear throughout the cycles and, over a sufficient number of full cycles, are present in substantially equal numbers in both portions, the subtraction of the two counts essentially eliminates the noise pulses. Any remaining pulses are those produced by the transmitter and may be processed as needed, and false tripping due to noise signals is avoided.

Transmission over a communication channel using carrier sense multiple access collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) may be performed by determining for each frame if the communication channel is busy after a backoff time proportional to a randomly generated number within a contention window (CW). The present invention is to provide a power line communication adapter capable of being freely assembled by accessories thereof, which includes an anti-noise device having a first male plug for receiving a power line communication signal from a power outlet, a first female socket for connecting the first male plug with an electrical equipment through a filter module, and a first adapting port connected to the first male plug, such that noise generated by the electrical equipment device can be filtered by the filter module without interfering the power line communication signal; and a power line communication device having a power line communication module along with a second adapting port connected thereto such that, when the first and second adapting ports are connected with each other, the power line communication device and the anti-noise device are combined into an anti-noise adapter for receiving and transmitting the power line communication signal. 1. Activity sensing in the home has a variety of important applications, including healthcare, entertainment, home automation, energy monitoring and post-occupancy research studies. Many existing systems for detecting occupant activity require large numbers of sensors, invasive vision systems, or extensive installation procedures. Disclosed is an approach that uses a single plug-in sensor to detect a variety of electrical events throughout the home. This sensor detects the electrical noise on residential power tines created by the abrupt switching of electrical devices and the noise created by certain devices while in operation. Machine learning techniques are used to recognize electrically noisy events such as turning on or off a particular light switch, a television set, or an electric stove. The system has been tested to evaluate system performance over time and in different types of houses. Results indicate that various electrical events can be learned and classified with accuracies ranging from 85-90%. 1. Data is modulated on first and second carrier frequencies and is transmitted via respective first and second lines of the powerline system. A determination is made of the spectrum characteristics of a radio environment in the vicinity of the broadband powerline communication system that is transmitting data on modulated carrier frequencies. In order to avoid interference, certain ones of the carrier frequencies otherwise used by the broadband powerline communication system may be selectively masked based on the determination. The spectrum characteristics may be determined 1) in advance and used to compile a configuration database comprising frequency masking parameters; 2) by monitoring the local radio environment using the transmitter/receiver nodes of the system; or 3) based upon receipt of an indication from a conflicting user that the user is experiencing interference. Various combinations of these spectrum characteristic determination techniques may also be used.

A plurality of intermediate transceiver units (PET Repeaters) both receives and retransmits the high power FHSS signals. The base station (PETRC Base Unit) can receive the high power FHSS signals from both the encoder transmitter devices and the intermediate transceiver units. The intermediate transceiver units aggregates metering data from multiple encoder transmitter devices prior to block retransmission of the metering data to the base station. The high power FHSS signals are transmitted at a maximum hopping rate to reduce power consumption and increase battery life of the devices.
