Additionally, spatial diversity is increased for each codeword improving the robustness of the system against inaccurate CQI reports.

Mechanisms of reducing beamforming feedback reporting sizes in WIFI communication. At a beamformee STA, beamforming feedback matrices generated from channel estimation are subject to two compression processes: first compressed to angles through Givens rotation and then further compressed by using source coding. A CSI vector quantizer (VQ) system is provided for time-correlated channels. The VQ system operates a receiver forwarding quantized channel state information in the form of indices and a transmitter predicting channel state change. The VQ system is aimed at feedback channels, in which bit errors, erasures and delays can occur. The VQ system uses transmitter-side channel prediction algorithms that work with the quantized CSI information and allow the system to recover from feedback channel transmission errors, erasures and delays. Moreover, the techniques can be used to lower the required feedback rate, while keeping the system's throughput at the required level.

In yet another aspect, the UE may report the CQI such that SU-MIMO and MU-MIMO may be supported for the UE.

In one aspect, multiple codewords may be generated for transmission from multiple antennas (e.g., virtual antennas), with the number of codewords being less than the number of antennas. Each codeword may be mapped across the multiple antennas. Two codewords may be generated. For rank 3, the first codeword may be mapped to one layer (or one antenna on each subcarrier), and the second codeword may be mapped to two layers (or two antennas on each subcarrier). For rank 4, each codeword may be mapped to two layers. In another aspect, a base CQI indicative of an average signal quality may be determined. A delta CQI indicative of improvement over the average signal quality may also be determined. In yet another aspect, selection may be performed with different penalty factors for different ranks or number of codewords.

A method includes receiving a Multiple-Input Multiple Output (MIMO) signal over multiple communication channels from an antenna array (40) including a first set of antennas (44A...44D) having a first polarization and a second set of the antennas (48 A...48D) having a second polarization that is orthogonal to the first polarization. First feedback information is calculated relating to first interrelations between the antennas within either the first set or the second set. Second feedback information is calculated relating at least to second interrelations between the first set and the second set of the antennas. The first feedback information is transmitted at a first time/frequency granularity, and the second feedback information is transmitted at a second time/frequency granularity that is finer than the first time/frequency granularity.

Detection and mitigation of antenna element failures

In order to address the potential for antenna failure in large antenna arrays, a method, a computer-readable medium, and an apparatus are provided for wireless communication, e.g., at a base station or CPE. The apparatus detects a failure of a plurality of antenna elements in an antenna array associated with an antenna module in an antenna array comprising a plurality of antenna modules. The apparatus then applies a mitigation procedure in response to detecting the failure, e.g., when a fraction of antenna elements for which a failure is detected meets a threshold. The mitigation procedure may include any of switching to a different codebook, increasing DL or UL transmission power, or a VGA. The failure may be detected by transmitting pilot signals using sets of antenna elements of the antenna array and using signal strength measurements to detect antenna element failures.
