A purification system can provide for efficient heating of liquid via film heating, which, rather than heating a large volume of liquid, can heat a thin layer of liquid thus reducing the amount of energy required to evaporate the liquid. Film heating can enable evaporation of liquids using less energy than other methods. In addition, when liquids (e.g., seawater) having dissolved solids (e.g., salts) are heated, both the liquid and the solids must be heated. As evaporation occurs, the concentration of solids increases and more energy must be supplied to the liquid in order to cause evaporation. Because purification system can heat only a layer of liquid, less energy is required to heat the solids, which can allow for higher energy efficiencies in purifying liquids. These efficiencies can lead to decreased cost of potable water. Related apparatus, systems, techniques, and articles are also described.

The photo-catalytic reactor unit module can also act independently for small scale application. The photo-catalytic reactor unit module comprises hollow optical fibres and catalytic coating material held by the fibres. The inner structure of hollow fibre reduces luminous energy loss as the light passes through it. The outer catalyst coating layer comprises graphene and titanium dioxide in ceramic agglomeration state, such that electrons and holes generated on the interface of catalyst inner surface and ultraviolet (UV) lights can be rapidly and efficiently diffused and transferred to the outside surface of the catalyst coating layer to participate photo-catalytic reactions. The transmission of electrons and holes is enhanced by graphene in 3 dimensions inside the catalyst coating layer. The hollow fibres are also enhanced in mechanic strength by the ceramic coating layer of catalyst. The hollow fibres are fused and welded at the two ends, which melted at high temperature to form convex lens for facilitating collecting light radiation. The hollow structure of the optical fibres possesses buoyancy that can lift the photo-catalytic reactor unit module or its assembled groups floating on the surface of water or wastewater to be treated. In the solar-powered desalination plant installation, moist air circulates in a thermosiphon circuit. The air passes in turn through a solar radiation heater, an evaporator, an atmospheric condenser and a condensate receiver. In the evaporator, heated air picks up moisture as the air passes over the surface of salt water in a reservoir. Pref. the condenser is located in the shade of the evaporator. The plant is pref. constructed to provide a chimney passage which induces a current of atmospheric air to flow through the condenser and cool the moist air in the thermosiphon circuit. Heat transferred to the atmospheric air by the condenser is pref. used to warm the reservoir of salt water. The plant installation is used to produce pure drinking water from salt water. No energy other than solar radiation is required to operate this plant. The plant is simple and inexpensive and contains no moving parts such as pump impellers or fan rotors. The installation can be constructed as a compact, packaged unit.

An economic process is provided for the simultaneous prodn. of sources of energy, fresh water and by-prod(s) from aqs. materials (I) and an energy source such as solar energy. The process comprises heating (I) to boiling pt. in a closed tight space to which (I) can be fed and from which the water vapour produced and evaporation residue can be recovered. The water vapour formed is sent, under pressure, to a turbo-alternator turbine for generating electricity, and is then condensed to fresh water on leaving the turbine. The evaporation residue of (I) is recovered as by-prod. According to the novel feature, the water vapour is also sent, either directly, or on leaving the turbine, over iron heated to 800 degrees C to be partially reduced to hydrogen which is recovered. The water vapour which has not been reduced by the iron is condensed to water for various uses. The initial energy source used for heating (I) and the water vapour to be reduced is, apart from solar energy, any other known source, even a non-economical one, e.g. coal from deep mines. The condensed water may be used for drinking, watering, irrigating or heating. The evaporation residue may be used for producing fuels opt. after further processing. The ferric oxide formed in the reduction of the water vapour may be used as oligo-element in agriculture.

Method of desalination of sea water includes the placement of energy generators forming a steam-air flow, cooling of water vapor in condensers and selection of fresh water. Energy generators are made in the form of lenses collecting sunlight with the lens placed on the main optical axis in the focus of the lenses of solar energy pullers rigidly connected to the lenses, for heating and evaporation of sea water. Pullers are supplied with incoming water conduits and outgoing steam lines. Outgoing steam pipelines and incoming water conduits are connected to heat exchangers for recuperation of heat of condensation and heating of sea water. Energy sweepers, heat exchangers, water lines and steam pipelines are installed inside hollow floats with positive buoyancy, the lids of which are lenses. Incoming waterways are reported at the bottom of the floats with surrounding seawater. Floats are assembled on the surface of the sea, they regulate their buoyancy, ensuring the presence of seawater inside the energy pullers at the focus of the lenses. Lenses are oriented perpendicular to the sun's rays, using solar-tracking systems that feed on solar energy. Condensers are located at the bottom of the floats below sea level. Horizontal fixation of floats during sea waves and their specified buoyancy is provided by cargo suspended by cables to the bottom of the floats. An electric water feed pump is provided for use in regions where potable water and electricity supplies are not available. The unit may be contained in an attache case (28), the photovoltaic generator being deployed horizontally or at an adjustable angle while the water purifier is held vertically for immediate and convenient use. Two sterilizing lamps may be provided, one being installed within the particle filter cartridge and the other being installed within the active carbon filter cartridge.

In certain embodiments, a process for water distillation includes a cycled arrangement, alternating between a day cycle and a night cycle to enhance the yield of potable water. Additionally, in certain embodiments, the system includes a solar still having a design and orientation to maximize solar energy capture.

Apparatus is provided for converting sea or other undrinkable waters to drinkable water without the use of driven or moving parts. Reliance upon gradient effects is made to effect the vaporization of, for example, sea water, followed by the condensation of the vapor to form distilled water. Gradient effects are achieved through the provision of differentials in the thermal conductivity, capillary activity, adsorptive, absorptive and/or pressure characteristics of particulate materials, or combinations of such physicals. For example, a column is packed with material graded as to its conductivity, the least thermally conductive material being nearest the cold or ambient water that is to be purified. In packing the column each successive layer of material has a greater thermal conductivity than the layer beneath it with the most conductive being at the top near the outlet arm of the column. The final outlet arm or tube is unheated or is at a temperature lower than that of the topmost conductive material so that vapor reaching the outlet tube gets condensed. This tube leads to a container kept in a cool place as, for example, buried in the ground, as, for instance, at the seashore deep enough to be cooled or to be surrounded by water, thus keeping the condensate cold. Pure water so collected is removed by such means as is desired. Other impure, volatile liquids may be similarly purified.

A self-contained, portable rainwater collecting and purifying system for collecting, filtering and disinfecting rainwater or other precipitation primarily for drinking purposes. In a preferred embodiment the portable rainwater collecting and purifying system is characterized by a housing which contains the system components. The bottom of the housing is typically fitted with skids or wheels, and a pair of sloped water collection panels is typically hinged to the housing for receiving the falling rainwater. A collection gutter receives the rainwater from the panels and drains the rainwater into a vertical standpipe fitted with a typically screen filter or filters. As the rising water in the standpipe eventually overflows, the overflowing, partially filtered water leaves the standpipe and enters a water collection tank through a hopper typically fitted with a gravity-flow filter or filters. A typically battery-operated pump automatically pumps the water through a pair of particle filters which remove dirt and other particulate impurities from the water, and finally through an ultraviolet light sterilizer which kills bacteria and other microorganisms to render the water suitable for drinking. In another embodiment solar panels provided on the respective water collection panels collect solar energy for energizing the pump, ultraviolet sterilizer or both. In still another embodiment, a heating blanket is provided beneath each water collection panel for heating and melting accumulating snow, sleet or ice on the panels, and the melted precipitation is filtered and disinfected through the system.

High pressure steam raised in a solar energy boiler is expanded directly into a turbine driving a vapour compressor. Exhaust steam from the turbine is passed into a desalinator circuit to transfer heat indirectly to raw water which is thus converted to vapour while the exhaust steam is condensed. The vapour is piped to the intake of the compressor which delivers compressed vapour to the inlet end of the desalinator circuit. The desalinator circuit discharges condensate which is partly drained off as drinking water and partly recycled to the solar energy boiler to produce high pressure steam. Solar energy alone is required to power this process which operates at a high thermal efficiency.

The process, designed to separate substances in solution in a liquid, uses contraflow heat exchange between a coolant gas or liquid passing in a vertical or inclined closed circuit over the surfaces of multiple hollow heat exchange plates (50) with narrow spaces between them filled with a non-condensable gas, especially air. The hot liquid to be distilled flows down in fine layers over the plates' outer surfaces, while the coolant flows down inside them, cooling as the liquid to be distilled evaporates, with its vapour diffusing in the non-condensable gas. The rising flow of the coolant is reheated in its passage, recovering the latent heat of condensation from a large part of the vapour. A source of heat (120) is located between the hottest ends of the heat exchange surfaces, and a source of cold (92) which lowers the temperature of the coolant is located between their cooler ends. During the process a more or less constant enthalpy gap is maintained between the heat exchange surfaces, and the coolant temperatures (T1, T2; T3, T4) at the upper and lower ends of the surfaces are determined by the system's Maximum Criterion efficiency, which equals Q/P.V where Q is the thermal power of the exchanged distillation, P is the thermal power of the heat source, and V is the active volume of the system.

At the same time, the entire area above the panels or trays on top is covered with an outer transparent shell, which creates a greenhouse effect under it. The invention relates to a desalination method and system that uses freeze crystallization technology that incorporates the use of compressed air energy as the source for freezing temperatures. When compressed air is released by a turbo expander, chilled air is produced as a by-product, wherein the chilled air is introduced into a crystallization chamber. Also injected into the chamber is a spray cloud of seawater droplets, which has been pre-chilled by heat exchange with the cold chamber walls, and which is then circulated and exposed to the chilled air in the chamber. The sizes of the droplets can vary, but are preferably predetermined, along with the relative temperatures, flows and speeds of the spray and chilled air, such that when the droplets are circulated within the chilled air, and settle at the bottom of the chamber, they are deposited at slightly above the eutectic temperature. This way, the ice/snow mass that forms at the bottom of the chamber will consist of frozen ice crystals, and a residue of salt water brine, which can runoff from the mass, either from the sides, or through any voids or channels that may form within the mass.

A process for recovering potable water from a source of salinous water -- e.g. sea and/or ocean water. Certain modifications afford the simultaneous generation of power. A portion of salinous water and an air stream are introduced into a solar radiation heat sink, with the air stream flowing over the salinous water. Heated, water-containing air is withdrawn from the heat sink and reduced in temperature to condense potable water. The heated salinous water, from the heat sink, is at least in part recycled thereto, while the remainder is introduced into a plurality of flash separation zones, each succeeding one of which is maintained at a lower subatmospheric pressure than the preceding, and through which the liquid phase passes in series. In order to afford a 24-hour continuous process, the hourly rate of heated salinous water withdrawal, including evaporated water, is less than the rate of salinous water introduction to the heat sink. The resulting vaporous phases are passed through separate turbines, or through different stages of a multiple-stage turbine, from the resulting motion of which energy is recovered -- e.g. power is generated. The exiting turbine vapors are cooled and/or condensed via indirect contact with a second portion of salinous water to recover additional potable water. To effect the reduction in temperature, the heated, water-containing air stream may be employed to vaporize a hydrocarbon which passes through a turbine for the purpose of producing energy. Salinous water returned to the original source thereof is at a temperature not more than 15° F. greater than the coldest salinous water obtained from the source. Where available, it is preferred that the temperature of the second salinous water portion be at least about 5° F. (2.8° C.) to about 15° F. (8.4° C.) lower than that of the salinous water portion introduced into the heat sink.

The present invention of manually operated continuous flow type concentrated solar drinking water disinfector improves the effectiveness and productivity of disinfection of drinking water for individual families or small communities, without using conventional fossil fuel derived heat or electricity or solar photovoltaic electricity, by clarifying the feed water with alum, aerating it manually, preheating it in solar water preheater and then while flowing as a thin stream exposing it directly to solar radiation without an intervening glass or plastic container material, with solar radiation incident on top side of pre-heater section and on top side of solar UV section intensified with mirrors and while the disinfector unit which is mounted on a trolley, is manually oriented towards the sun intermittently.

An arrangement to collect solar energy includes a transparent window (4) above the trough (2) to admit sunlight, and on which water vapour from the trough condenses. A trap (11) collects condensate which drips from the window (4). The novelty is that the depth of water in the trough (2) is less than 50 mm.

A purification system can provide for efficient heating of liquid via film heating, which, rather than heating a large volume of liquid, can heat a thin layer of liquid thus reducing the amount of energy required to evaporate the liquid. Film heating can enable evaporation of liquids using less energy than other methods. In addition, when liquids (e.g., seawater) having dissolved solids (e.g., salts) are heated, both the liquid and the solids must be heated. As evaporation occurs, the concentration of solids increases and more energy must be supplied to the liquid in order to cause evaporation. Because purification system can heat only a layer of liquid, less energy is required to heat the solids, which can allow for higher energy efficiencies in purifying liquids. These efficiencies can lead to decreased cost of potable water. Related apparatus, systems, techniques, and articles are also described.
