A process for separating a mixture of gases into a relatively condensable first component and a relatively non-condensable second component is provided. The first component comprises one or more gases selected from the group consisting of carbon dioxide, carbonyl sulphide and hydrogen sulphide and the second component one or more gases selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methane, ethane, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, oxygen and synthesis gas. The process itself comprises the following steps: (a) compressing and cooling a mixture of said first and second components in at least one compressor and at least one heat exchanger to a temperature and elevated pressure at which the first components condense and a two-phase gas-liquid mixture is formed; (b) separating the two phase mixture so formed into separate liquid first and gaseous second component fractions in a fractionation unit; (c) extracting residual first component from the separated gaseous second component fraction by scrubbing the second component at elevated pressure with a solvent (e.g. methanol) in a scrubber. In examples, the method further includes one or more steps of warming and expanding the gaseous second component fraction using at least one heat exchanger to exchange heat with a process stream and at least one turbo-expander capable of recovering mechanical work. The process described is highly energy efficient and is especially useful in hydrogen power plants, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycles (IGCC) and for sweetening sour natural gas.

In one embodiment, a filtration system utilizes a novel zeolite material that has been hardened to withstand ultrasonic welding conditions in order to reduce the propensity of such a material to destabilize and/or dust. Such a hardened zeolite thus enables for trapping and removal of certain undesirable gases (such as ammonia, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, and nitrous oxide, as examples) from an enclosed environment, particularly in combination with metal-doped silica gel materials. Such a hardened zeolite is acidic in nature and not reacted with any salts or like substances and, as it remains in a hardened state upon inclusion within a welded filter device, the filter medium itself permits proper throughput with little to no dusting, thereby providing proper utilization and reliability for such a gas removal purpose. Methods of using and the application within specific filter apparatuses are also encompassed within this invention.

The invention also relates to a method for long-time storage of CO 2 by using CO 2 as chase fluid or foaming gas according to the inventive method for oil recovery from heterogeneous reservoirs.

The interior vent includes a vent wall having a top portion attached to the interior surface of the exhaust stack along the entire inner perimeter of the exhaust stack and a lower portion that extends downward into the exhaust stack to form an annular space or gap between the vent wall and the interior surface of the exhaust stack, and at least one opening in the interior surface of the exhaust stack between the top and bottom portions of the vent wall. The blower creates a tangential flow of the exhaust gas with sufficient centrifugal force to concentrate substantially all of the HMW gases along the inner surface of the exhaust stack. A transfer pipe removes the HMW gases from the interior vent.

The acid gas removal system receives a sour gas stream and separates it into an overhead gas stream comprised primarily of methane, and a bottom acid gas stream comprised primarily of carbon dioxide. The sulfurous components removal system is placed either upstream or downstream of the acid gas removal system. The SCRS receives a gas stream and generally separates the gas stream into a first fluid stream comprising hydrogen sulfide, and a second fluid stream comprising carbon dioxide. Where the SCRS is upstream of the AGRS, the second fluid stream also includes primarily methane. Where the SCRS is downstream of the AGRS, the second fluid stream is principally carbon dioxide. The vapor stream is contacted with an absorption liquid under suitable conditions wherein an amount of the product alcohol is absorbed. The portion of the vapor stream that is absorbed can include an amount of each of the water, the product alcohol and optionally the CO 2 . The temperature at the onset of the absorption of the vapor stream into the absorption liquid can be greater than the temperature at the onset of condensation of the vapor stream in the absence of the absorption liquid. The product alcohol can be separated from the absorption liquid whereby the absorption liquid is regenerated. The absorption liquid can include a water soluble organic molecule such as an amine.

The dispersed bubble reactor (DBR) operates in the dispersed bubble flow regime to selectively absorb gas phase constituents into the liquid phase. The dispersion is achieved by shearing the large inlet gas bubbles into fine bubbles with circulating liquid and additional pumped liquid solvent when necessary. The DBR is capable of handling precipitates that may form during absorption or fine catalysts that may be necessary to promote liquid phase reactions. The DBR can be configured with multistage counter current flow sections by inserting concentric cylindrical sections into the riser to facilitate annular flow. While the DBR can absorb CO 2 in liquid solvents that may lead to precipitates at high loadings, it is equally capable of handling many different types of chemical processes involving solids (precipitates/catalysts) along with gas and liquid phases.

The invention relates to a method and a device for treating a carbon-dioxide-containing gas stream, in particular from a large-scale fired plant, e.g. from a power plant. The precompressed gas stream is separated in a carbon dioxide purification stage into a gas substream having an elevated carbon dioxide content (carbon dioxide product stream) and a gas substream having a decreased carbon dioxide content (vent gas stream). The carbon dioxide product stream is fed to further utilization and/or storage. In particular, by injecting the carbon dioxide underground, the emission of gases harmful to the climate can be reduced. For improving the energy efficiency, it is proposed that the vent gas stream is expanded in at least one expansion turbine and both the resultant kinetic energy and the resultant refrigeration are utilized for energy recovery. For utilizing the kinetic energy, the expansion turbine can be coupled to a compressor (booster) which compresses the crude gas stream and/or the carbon dioxide product stream. For utilizing the refrigeration generated in the expansion, the at least partially expanded vent gas stream can be brought into heat exchange with process streams which are to be cooled, e.g. the crude gas stream and/or the carbon dioxide product stream.

A convenient carbonaceous sorbent material is an activated carbon, and a convenient curable amine-containing polymer is an allyl-containing poly(ethyleneimine), having a number average molecular weight between about 1,000 and about 10,000. The polymer-carbon sorbents may contain sulfur in excess of an amount needed to cure the curable amine-containing polymer. Such polymer-carbon sorbents are shown to capture more mercury, in both elemental an ionic forms, compared to activated carbon and adsorb carbon dioxide.

A method for producing hydrocarbons from and/or storing C02 in an organic-rich rock formation. One embodiment of the method includes the steps of injecting the C02 into an injection well in the organic-rich rock formation and producing the hydrocarbons from a production well when a drainage volume of the production well has an average reservoir pressure equal to or less than a predetermined pressure. The hydrocarbons substantially include natural gas and the injection well is in fluid communication with the production well. The embodiment also includes capping the production well and feeding the C02 into the injection well when the produced hydrocarbons include a C02 mole fraction greater than or equal to a predetermined mole fraction.

In a method for adsorptively drying purified biogas and regenerating laden absorbents, foreign matter is not allowed to enter the purified biogas, the content of methane in the gas remains virtually unchanged and the effort involved in regenerating the laden adsorbent is reduced. Drying and regeneration are effected in a closed biogas cycle, wherein separate layers based on silica gel and molecular sieves are used as the adsorbent. The biogas to be dried first flows through the silica gel layer. The adsorbent is regenerated with exclusively heated, dried biomethane having a temperature of up to 150° C. which, after contact with adsorbent, is recirculated to the outflow of purified biogas. After regeneration, the bed is cooled by biomethane, which is subsequently recirculated to the outflow of purified biogas. Methane-containing water accumulating during drying and regeneration is recirculated to the biogas generation and/or purification.

Provided are a CO 2 absorber that reduces CO 2 contained in flue gas; a regenerator that reduces CO 2 contained in rich solvent absorbing CO 2 to regenerate the rich solvent, so that lean solvent having the CO 2 reduced in the regenerator is reused in the CO 2 absorber; a heat exchanger that allows the rich solvent to exchange heat with the lean solvent; and a controller that controls to extract rich solvent portion that is part of the rich solvent, to allow the rich solvent portion to bypass the heat exchanger, and to be supplied into the top of the regenerator without exchanging heat so as to minimize a sum of an enthalpy that is taken out of the regenerator as CO 2 gas accompanying steam and an enthalpy of the lean solvent after heat exchange with the rich solvent in the heat exchanger.
