A fluid recovery assembly continuously separates lubrication liquid from lubrication-impregnated shavings. The fluid recovery assembly includes a shredder which receives and shreds the lubrication-impregnated shavings. A centrifugal drum rotates the lubrication-impregnated shavings at a speed sufficient to pull the lubrication out of the lubrication-impregnated shavings. A single electrical motor supplies the energy to rotate the centrifugal drum, the shredder and any other hydraulically actuated accessory. When the high inertia centrifugal drum is accelerated to operating speed, little power is needed to keep it rotating. The path in which the fluid flows is changed from a free flow path (back to the reservoir) to a path including a hydraulic motor which powers the shredder. Thus, no separate electric motor is needed for the shredder. The shredder power is further enhanced by the flywheel effect of the centrifugal drum.

The dimensions of both cell and closure are such that liquids placed therein are retained by capillarity. In use, a reagent is placed in the cell 24 and the closure is fitted. A sample and dilutent are introduced to the closure via an hypodermic needle, but due to said capillarity the reagent and sample do not mix. CENTRIFUGE The cuvettes are inserted into holes in the rim of a rotor 11 (the rotor being removably located at 12 by spring arms 10 to facilitate loading). Upon spinning, the sample is transferred by centrifugal force from closure 25 to cell 24. Plate 26 is raised to fling off closures 25 (dotted), and photo-cell 23 is pivoted downwards to receive light from lamp 21 via successive samples. Water from the thermostatted bath is flung via ports 9a to the rim 16 and returns to the bath via ports 9.

Said gas separation part (30) is provided by a hollow rotor (12) between said inlet (14) and said pump housing (16), the inner wall of said rotor (12) providing a large rotatable gas separation surface (32). The diameter of said rotor (12) increases at said opposite end (22) of the apparatus to form a larger diameter pumping zone (17) extending into said pump housing (16). Said rotor (12) is provided with a blade wheel (24) extending into said pump housing (16). The apparatus is especially well suited for the gas-free re-cycling of backwater drained through a forming fabric in a papermaking process. The invention is also applicable to the removal of air from fluid materials separated by flotation.

The passages 25, 26 are in the form of tangentially-directed nozzles through which the oil is discharged as reaction jets causing rotation of the centrifuge. The clean oil from the centrifuge discharges in a casing 13 and is returned via a passage 27 to the engine sump. Clean oil from the cyclone flows through a vortex finder 22 back to the lubricating circuit.

A gas/liquid separator includes a housing and a rotatable degassing chamber in the housing. Liquid containing gas is fed into the housing and through an annular liquid inlet conduit which opens into the chamber. Degasified liquid is discharged from the rotating chamber through one or more discharge passages in the circumferential wall of the chamber due to centrifugal force on the liquid in the rotating chamber. An upstream portion of each discharge passage is farther radially from the chamber axis of rotation than is the exit port of the passage. This forms a column of liquid in each discharge passage which, in turn, provides a gas seal between the inside and the outside of the chamber to prevent separated gas from accompanying the liquid out of the chamber. In essence, the discharge passage incorporates a liquid sealed trap. In applications involving separation of gas from highly viscous liquids, such as drilling mud, the interior of the chamber can contain baffles which expose a large surface area of the liquid to the low pressure in the chamber. Gas withdrawn from the liquid flows from the chamber through an axial conduit within the annular liquid inlet conduit.

One end of the tubular cell is open and the other end is closed by an optically transparent wall which is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the cell. The cell receives one component of a solution to be optically analysed and a second component of the solution is received in a recess of a cover of the unit releasably secured in a position closing the open end of the cell. The cover is formed with an aperture connecting the recess of the cover to the cell in the closed position, so that the second component can flow into the cell during centrifuging.

The contents of these two tanks then being fed to a separate centrifuge and subsequent treatment. The process significantly reduces the volume of oily sludge containing heavy oils that are difficult to separate.

The bottom wall of the separator bowl has a bottom wall liner with a plurality of radially extending blades thereon on top thereof. The bottom wall liner is fixedly maintained relative to the conical wall structure but is angularly shiftable relative thereto either manually or in response to the blades engaging extraordinarily large pieces of metal, such as rod ends or the like.

Apparatus for monitoring the temperature of adsorbers formed from several segments in which a traveling carbonaceous fill is located between two perforated walls, through which the gas to be cleaned flows. Each segment has on the gas outlet side several measuring elements, responding at a predetermined temperature and distributed over the height and width of the exit cross section. These measuring elements are electrically connected in series and their lead-ins are connected to a power source and an indicator instrument located outside the segment. On the outside perforated wall, insulators are located, with a continuous soldering wire placed between them. Prefabricated fusible cutouts may be used as measuring elements and may be connected by electrical lines. Semiconductor resistors may also be so used. Each segment may have a thermocouple on the gas exit side which can travel throughout the entire height of that side. Separately charged ntirogen lines may be provided for cooling.

Oil and water carried by gas compressed in the compressor 1 is collected in a combined oil separator and pressure vessel 2 having a service header 6. Gas pressure in the vessel 2 forces oil through conduit 7, a cooler 10 and a conduit 11 into the compressor 1, a temperature responsive device 8 being provided to cause some of the oil to by-pass the cooler 10 when the oil is at a low temperature. The oil separator 14 may be disposed to receive oil from the vessel 2 through a conduit 13 and deliver to the conduit 7 or vice versa, or it may both receive oil directly from and deliver oil directly to the vessel 2. A pump 16 may be disposed on the inlet or outlet side of the separator 14 to increase the pressure difference thereacross. The water separator 14 is shown in Fig. 2 and comprises a hollow body 14', 14" which supports a shaft 19 and a rotary unit 22 rotatable on bearings 26, 27 carried by the shaft 19. Oil and water mixture to be separated flows into the rotary unit 22 through passages 20, 21 in the shaft, an annular space 23, and holes 24 in the hub 22' of the unit 22. <PICT:0447415/III/1> Hydrocarbon oils are de-waxed by diluting the oil with a heavy solvent whereby the oil solution is heavier than the wax and separating the wax in a centrifuge provided with a perforate wall in which a body of oil solution is maintained between the wall and the separated wax layer and when the body of wax is built up, removing the oil layer whereby the wax moves up to the wall. The wax is then washed with solvent. The wax layer is maintained in the desired position by controlling the inflowing wax-containing oil. Both crystalline and amorphous waxes are removed. The solvent preferably consists of a chlorinated hydrocarbon diluted with 25 per cent or more of a hydrocarbon diluent such as benzene or naphtha. Ethylene, methylene or propylene dichloride; dichlorethylene or trichlorethylene are specified. The oil is mixed with the solvent at 100 DEG F., and then cooled to -20 DEG F. A suitable centrifuge consists of a bowl 10 mounted on a shaft 11. The bowl is provided with a perforated wall or screen 14 and a spacing member 15 consisting of a coarse wire screen. A disc 16 extends radially inwards to form a liquid compartment 18. Liquid flows into the bowl through a nozzle 23 and channels 21, 22 at a rate controlled by wings 25. An adjustable skimming nozzle 28 when in position B removes liquid passing through the filter screen, and a scraper 31 and discharge shoot 32 removes the separated and washed wax. U.S.A. A mixture of materials is separated into its various constituents by flowing the mixture along a path while subjecting it to a centrifugal force acting substantially perpendicular to the general direction of the path and simultaneously suddenly diverting the mixture flow, at intervals along the whole of its path, from the general direction of the path in a direction which is substantially perpendicular to both the centrifugal force and the general direction of the path. The invention is applicable to the separation of liquids, of solids from liquids, of solid particles or liquid droplets from gases and of impure wash water from gases washed thereby. Separation is carried out in a platetype centrifuge in which the plates 8, Figs. 5 and 6, have orifices 9 which are angularly staggered from one plate to the next, the orifices and the spaces between the plates constituting zig-zag passages having a generally axial direction. Thus each time the mixture flow passes through an orifice it is diverted from its generally axial direction 10 along bends 11, 12 so that centrifugal forces f due to the deflection tend to propel the heavy constituent along trajectories 13 whereby it impinges on the plate opposite and is more efficiently moved radially outwardly by the centrifugal force F due to rotation of the plates. The plates 8 may, as shown, be flat annular discs in which the orifices are constituted by slots. The slots may be straight or curved; their width may vary from the centre to the periphery of the discs; they may extend radially or at an angle relative to the centrifuge axis; and they may or may not lead to the outer or inner peripheral edges of the discs. The ionized gas mixture is enclosed in a closed static magnetic field configuration which is rotationally symmetrical about the axis of the separating chamber and the thus enclosed gas mixture is penetrated with an externally applied electric field whose field lines lie in planes containing the axis of the separating chamber and contain components which are perpendicular to the magnetic field.

Apparatus for separating a mixed liquid containing components of different specific gravities includes an inner cylinder rotatably disposed in an outer cylinder. The mixed liquid is introduced into the inner cylinder and the latter has a concentric opening at one longitudinal end thereof through which separated components of lesser specific gravity pass. Disk means are disposed at one longitudinal end portion of the inner cylinder and is arranged such that generally inner and outer concentric columns of separated components of lesser and greater specific gravities respectively are formed in the inner cylinder. Operable means lead from the outer concentric column of separated components of higher specific gravity to a discharge opening in the outer cylinder and is operable to mitigate the effects of centrifugal force on the separated liquid component of heavier specific gravity as the latter pass to discharge.
