Handles, which may be provided with a throttle control lever 32, are provided at one end of an elongate tension member 34 so that the user can grasp the handles while standing on the craft. The craft has means for maintaining a sufficient supply of fuel to the engine so as to enable the engine to remain running for some time after inversion of the craft. In one embodiment (Figs. 1, 2) the engine 14 is housed in a compartment 43 -having a detachable cover 42 sealed at 44 to the remainder of the hull. Air enters the compartment 43 through duct 48 which extends downwardly to prevent water flooding the compartment when the craft is overturned. Cooling air, drawn in by fan 14a, leaves via outlet 50 which is closed when overturned by a counterweighted valve 52. The fuel tank (Fig. 2) comprises a main reservoir 46a (having a non-vented cap) and an auxiliary reservoir 46b which communicate through a tube 62. A pipe 66 leads from the outlet 64 of the auxiliary reservoir 46b to the carburetter via a 3-way connector 67 which contains a gravity-operated ball check valve 70 and from which a pipe 68 leads to the top of the main reservoir. In normal operation of the craft, fuel is supplied to the engine through the pipe 66; vent air enters through diaphragm bleed valve 72 and valve 70 is open. When the craft is overturned, the engine is still able to run since fuel which is retained by tube 62 is fed through pipe 66. Vent air still enters at valve 72 but valve 70 is shut. ABSTRACT An oil tank suitable for an aircraft mounted gas turbine engine is divided into three series connected chambers. Aerated oil after engine use is fed into the first chamber and de-aerated oil withdrawn from the third chamber for engine use. The chambers are interconnected in such a manner that when the tank is inverted, a reservoir of oil is retained within the third chamber to provide a continued supply of oil to the oil outlet for a finite time period and insufficient oil flows into the first chamber from the second to obstruct an air vent provided in the first chamber.

A tank venting, pressure and temperature relieving, and spill preventing valve for fuel tanks. The valve has a spin chamber (94), having generally circular cross sections and at least one side wall inlet opening (106) that is tangentially directed with respect to the circumferences of the cross sections. There is a circular outlet (80) at a normally upper and open end of the chamber. The chamber cross sections decrease in diameter upwardly of the inlet opening to below the outlet opening whereby gas venting through the chamber spins a light weight, buoyant ball (90) around the chamber so as to prevent the ball from closing during venting. The ball valve is adapted to be lifted to seat (88) on the outlet to close it when liquid enters the chamber to a predetermined level. A heavy ball (92) in the chamber holds the light weight valve ball on the seat when the chamber has been tilted a predetermined amount. There is a second heavy ball (84) externally of the chamber adjacent the outlet opening and adapted to move the light weight valve ball off the seat when the liquid is below a predetermined level and the chamber is not tilted, so that the outlet will be open for venting.

The relief valve assembly has a spring-loaded poppet valve that vents the interior of a transport tanker to the atmosphere when gaseous pressure within the tank exceeds a predetermined limit. Sudden surge protection from a pressure spike created by liquid within the tank during the instant that the tank strikes the ground during accidental roll over is provided to keep the poppet valve closed during the surge condition. A reaction piston having one face that counteracts the face of the poppet valve is exposed to pressure within the tank simultaneously with the poppet valve, but the counteracting effect of that surface is normally overcome by a neutralizing chamber on the opposite side of the reaction piston which is likewise exposed to the interior of the tank. While gaseous pressure can reach all working surfaces of the valve essentially at the same time during gradual, progressive pressure buildup, in a sudden surge situation the liquid is restricted by port means from instantaneously entering the neutralizing chamber so that the reaction piston instead holds the poppet closed at this time. Once the initial liquid surge has passed, pressure within the tank can gradually enter the neutralizing chamber to allow the poppet valve to open in the usual manner if pressure exceeds the predetermined limit.

A vent tube having a first branch and a second branch for use in a cryogenic container through which the interior of the container is communicated to the atmosphere. The cryogenic container is adapted to receive a fixed volume of cryogenic fluid at a uniform temperature and density. In a filling operation, the first branch of the vent tube contacts the cryogenic fluid and carries a portion of the fluid to the atmosphere to inform an operator that the capacity of the container has been reached. After the container is filled, the temperature in the stored cryogenic fluid rises. As the temperature changes, distinct stratified layers of fluid of different densities and temperatures can be measured in the container. The change in temperature causes the cryogenic fluid to expand and submerge the adjacent first branch of the vent tube. Thereafter, the second branch, which is located at the gravitational top of the container, provides a flow path to the atmosphere for the top layer of cryogenic fluid to assure that the higher density cryogenic fluid is retained in the container means.

A fluid-responsive vent control valve for an automobile fuel tank in which a liquid level responsive float controls a flexible, ribbon type valve member to peel it on and off a valve seat to open and close the valve. In one embodiment the float and outlet structure are offset. In an alternate embodiment the float and vent outlet are coaxial, and the ribbon valve is attached between the float and the valve body with a vent closure portion aligned with the outlet and a hinge portion offset from the outlet and connected to the float to provide opening and closing force to the ribbon valve. The outlet is preferably circular, and further includes a roundoff notch which cannot be closed by the pressure differential across the ribbon valve, but requires a final closing movement by the float and closure assist structure to fully close the valve.
