A hose nozzle particularly suitable for use in self-service gasoline pumps has a pressure seal mounted on the flange of the spout. The seal mates with a matching surface on the filling neck of the tank to be filled. A source of vacuum is connected to a chamber in the seal. When this chamber is blocked by reason of the nozzle being properly seated in the filler cap, a pressure sensitive relay device is actuated to allow gasoline to flow through the nozzle. A source of vacuum pressure is connected to a sensor tube which operates the pressure sensitive relay device when the tank is full. This same tube exhausts gasoline vapors into a remote nonhazardous area.

New and improved fluid supply control method and apparatus for periodic fluid merger which are particularly adapted to the periodic, precisely timed introduction of precisely and uniformly sized fluid segments into a fluid stream are disclosed and comprise a segmenting fluid supply line which respectively connects with a pressurized source of said segmenting fluid at substantially constant pressure and with the line in which said fluid stream is flowing. First and second, quick-acting flow interrupting means are operatively associated with said fluid supply line at spaced locations thereon, and a cavity of substantially constant volume is formed between said flow interrupting means. In operation, and for the formation of each of said segments, said first flow interrupting means are opened to effect the filling of said cavity with said pressurized fluid whereupon said first flow interrupting means are closed and said second flow interrupting means opened to effect the flow of said pressurized fluid from said cavity into said fluid stream to form said segments. A form of the invention is disclosed wherein said fluid supply line is constituted by a compressible, resilient tube and said flow interrupting means comprise means to compress and close said tube at spaced locations thereon. In this disclosed form, the cavity is formed by the volume of the tube which extends between said flow interrupting means.

The driver is located at the proximal end of a conventional syringe; the fluid exit port at the distal end. The driver generates a gas that inflates an elongated bladder situated within the filled syringe. Expansion of the bladder releases liquid at a rate nearly identical to the gas generation rate. The dispenser is held in a vertical position with the distal end pointed downward. Liquid is released drop-wise onto a porous material from which it can evaporate. A battery-driven electrochemical oxygen generator is the gas source. Means to attach the dispenser in its vertical position are provided. Such dispensing devices can be used to release pheromones, repellants, insecticides, fragrances, etc.

The method includes the steps of introducing one fluid into the other to form a mixture, inducing cavitation in the mixture to reduce at least one of the fluids to a large number of relatively small units, and distributing the small units uniformly throughout the mixture. In a preferred embodiment, the step of inducing cavitation comprises introducing the mixture into a chamber having a rotating disk formed with a plurality of irregularities such as bores. The irregularities on the rotating disk induce cavitation in the mixture. The cavitation also breaks down van der Waals attractions within the mixture to enhance mixing.

The method includes the steps of introducing one fluid into the other to form a mixture, inducing cavitation in the mixture to reduce at lea st one of the fluids to a large number of relatively small units, and distributing the small units uniformly throughout the mixture. In a preferre d embodiment, the step of inducing cavitation comprises introducing the mixtur e into a chamber having a rotating disk formed with a plurality of irregularities such as bores. The irregularities on the rotating disk induce cavitation in the mixture. The cavitation also breaks down van der Waals attractions within the mixture to enhance mixing.

When the pressure inside the bellows exceeds the pre-charged pressure, the bellows expands, pulling the piston upwardly and opening fluid communication from the tubing into the casing through the valve. A controlled-size fluid outlet port allows the tubing fluid to exit into the casing.

ABSTRACT This invention relates to a storage system and method for storing a valuable liquid in a subterranean cavity with a displacing liquid such as brine. The valuable liquid, which normally has a density above or the same as that of the displacing liquid, is modified by dissolving therein small amounts of a light fluid such as alkanes and alkenes of up to 4 carbon atoms, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide or combinations thereof. The amount of the light fluid dissolved in the stored liquid is sufficient to maintain the density of this phase below that of the displacing liquid so that the valuable liquid is stored over the displacing liquid. Virtually any valuable liquid desired to be stored in a subterranean cavity, which is substantially immiscible with the displacing liquid, can be so stored with the system and method of the present invention, but there will generally be no advantage in doing so unless the density of the liquid to be stored is normally greater than or the same as that of the displacing liquid at contemplated storage condition. When saturated brine is used as the displacing liquid this invention is particularly attractive for storing relatively heavy liquids such as carbon disulfide and the halogenated hydrocarbons. The density of the liquid to be stored is preferably at least 1 kg/m3 lower than that of the displacing liquid to ensure that there is a sufficient density difference to avoid phase inversion or dispersion.

Abstract PASSIVE PROPELLANT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM A passive propellant management system for a spacecraft liquid propellant tank (1) comprises several preferably V-shaped channels (2) which communicate liquid propellant from regions within the tank (1) to an outlet port (8), which expels liquid propellant but not pressurant gas. A liquid/bubble chamber assembly (9) couples the channels (2) with the outlet port (8). The channels (2) comprise relatively open portions (11) and relatively closed portions (10). In the relatively open portions (11), liquid is retained in a gap (12) between open ends of the V channels (2) and the inner wall of the tank (1). In the relatively closed portions (10), a screen, mesh or perforated plate (14) covers the open end of the V channels (2), intermediate the V channels (2) and the inner wall of the tank (l). The placement of the relatively open and closed portions (11, 10, respectively) is intentionally preselected based upon mission requirements. Where pressurant gas ullage is expected to be present, e.g., during-periods of high-g, relatively open portions (11) are used. Where liquid propellant is expected to be present, e.g., during periods of relatively low g, relatively closed portions (10) are used. The liquid/bubble chamber assembly (9) comprises a liquid trap (27) and bubble trap (28), which operate synergistically with each other and with the channels (2) to provide optimum liquid flow during all phases of the spacecraft mission.

When the second fuel tank 17 is fueled after landing, the stored NEA is pushed out into a first fuel tank 15 through the spill-back pipe 23 by fuel F. Thus, the concentration of oxygen within the first fuel tank 15 can be also maintained low. Accordingly, it is possible to cut out the need for supplying the NEA before fueling, and thereby fuel the fuel tank while avoiding fuel explosion.

An apparatus and method for detecting and handling liquid separation in a liquid emulsion disposed in a tank (1) by preventing separated liquid from entering a withdrawal conduit (3) disposed in the lowe r portion of the tank (1) by an apparatus comprising a pump (9) driven by an electric motor (15) and taking its suction from the lower portion of the tank (1) and discharging adjacent the central portion of the tank (1), a float (5), which sinks in the emulsion and floats on the high density liquid is cooperatively associated with a relay (17) to start the pump motor (15) when accumulated high density liquid raises the float (5) a predetermined amount, a time delay (21) runs the pump (9) a predetermined length of time sufficient to reemulsify t~ e accumulated high density and preventing it from entering the withdrawal conduit (3).
