A statically and dynamically pressure balanced fluid control valve (10). The valve (10) contains a spool (24) that is moved within an inner chamber (26) of a valve housing (28) by a pair of solenoids (34, 36). The ports are symmetrically located on each side of a center port (20), wherein the resultant fluid forces on the spool (24) are in opposite directions. The opposing forces create a net fluid force of approximately zero, so that the spool (24) is dynamically pressure balanced when the valve (10) is switched to a new position. The spool (24) also has an inner channel (40) and a pair of end openings (42) that are in fluid communication with the inner chamber (26) of the valve (10). When the spool (24) is pulled to a new position, the end openings (42) and inner channel (40) allow fluid within the inner chamber (26) to flow out of the space between the end of the spool (24) and the housing (28).

A new and improved grease shunt valve and lubrication system for a printing press or the like is achieved by the adding of vent drains and/or seals to prevent the accumulation of a waxy-like residue from the grease that interfered with operation of a return spring for closing of the valve. An existing solenoid, operated, grease shunt valve may be retrofitted with an additional body portion having a grease drain vent therein and a seal that seals grease from flowing along a solenoid, actuating rod and into the solenoid core. Preferably, an end plug that seals one end of the return spring is drilled to provide the drain vent for grease flowing into the spring chamber. Vent holes may also be drilled into the solenoid housing to drain and vent grease flowing into the solenoid core.

The present disclosure provides a high flow coefficient spool valve ( 50 ) through one or more changes in the flow path from a conventional spool valve. The body ( 56 ) of the spool valve includes spherically contoured internal grooves ( 68 ). The spool ( 58 ), slidably engaged inside the body ( 56 ), includes concave surfaces between seals ( 62 ) that is complementary to the spherically shaped internal grooves ( 68 ) of the body. The spherical shape of the body internal grooves ( 68 ) and/or concave shape of the spool allow more volume and more laminar flow therebetween, resulting in an increased flow coefficient and flow capacity. The body also is formed with transverse port windows in the port that contour into a bore of the body adjacent the spool. A choke volume in the flow is strategically designed in a parallel flow location rather than a perpendicular flow location to promote laminar flow and lessen turbulence to also increase the flow coefficient.

The through holes are arranged such that, when the fluid pressure increases, they close one after the other to increase the regulator fluidic resistance so that a fluid flow rate would be substantially constant as a function of the pressure applied on the first surface within a predefined pressure range.

The invention provides a control valve having a valve piston and coacting valve sleeve for flow control in booster power steering systems of the kind having a servo steering pump and a metering pump, especially as used in motor vehicles having power steering cylinders. The valve piston and valve sleeve have novel rings and grooves that effect a throttling flow control as the valve piston is shifted in steering, which substantially reduces vibration or chatter of the valve, permits ready return to neutral of the valve piston and the danger of cavitation in the power cylinder precluded. The dimensioning of special rings on the piston coacting with rings in the valve sleeve produces the advantages of the invention particularly when the valve is controlling high pressures. The arrangement effects a throttling of pressure flow from the metering pump to the power cylinder such that, when the valve piston is shifted for steering, low throttling is at first effected followed by high throttling as the valve piston moves to its fully shifted position, corresponding to initial low pressure in a power cylinder reaching high pressure in the course of power piston travel, as pressure flow is metered from the manually operated metering pump to the control valve.
