In a screw holder in which bands of synthetic resin are disposed on one side of a series of screws out of alignment with the line connecting the center of each screw to stabilize the feed of the screws by the feed pawl of a screwdriver, the screws are driven in the right position regardless of the presence of the bands. A series of screws having an enlarged head are held between a pair of bands of synthetic resin. While a substantially straight main band having a larger cross-sectional area than a secondary band maintains the strength of the screw holder, a secondary band is allowed to bend according to the profile of the screw held therebetween. The outer surface of the main band is flat, whereas an intermediate part between adjoining screws where the two bands meet is flattened without forming a rib-like projection therein. Each screw is caused to bite in the main band to reduce the thickness of its bitten part.

A charge of flat scraps from a prepreg starting material is supplied, recording the overall area of the scraps. Then the scraps are fragmented by cutting so as to obtain cut fragments of predetermined size. A strip of backing material and a strip of protective material are supplied. The cut fragments are then distributed in a random manner on the strip of backing material, the feeding speed of the strip of backing material being adjusted depending on the recorded area of the input scraps, so that the cut fragments form a substantially homogeneous layer. The strip of protective material is then arranged over the cut fragments distributed on the strip of backing material, and the whole assembly is then compacted so as to form a strip of recycled prepreg material.

More specifically, methods and apparatus for stretching one or more ribbons of thermoplastic elastomeric material, immobilizing the stretched material in its extended state, subjecting spaced discrete areas of the stretched material to heat so as to "kill" the elastic properties thereof in the heated regions while leaving the elastic properties of the intermediate unheated regions thereof unaltered and bonding the alternate elasticized and non-elasticized zones of the elastic ribbon to a continuous web suitable for use in forming a plurality of interconnected, but severable, like conformable garments having selected discrete elasticized areas on a high speed production basis. In the preferred form of the invention, the conformable garment thus formed comprises a disposable diaper product.

An apparatus for manufacturing cellular laminate structural panels includes one or more supply stations of a flexible strip material including folding rollers for sequentially folding the strip material into cellular structures and feeding the cellular structures into a conveyor where the cellular structures are held in compression. The apparatus further includes a laminating station where the folded cellular structures are laminated to an upper and/or lower sheet material to which lines of a bonding medium have been applied prior to engagement with the cellular structures. The folded cellular structures are heated before engaging the sheet material so as to enhance the bonding of the sheet material to the cellular structures and subsequent to bonding, the laminate is passed through a cooling station to set the bonding medium. Downstream from the laminating station, the laminate passes through a side edge folding station where edges of the sheet material are folded over side edges of the laminate to finish the side edges of the laminate and subsequently the laminate is passed into a cutter for cutting the continuous laminate into predetermined lengths. Ends of the cut panels then receive rigid edge strips to fully finish the panel. The method of the invention includes the steps performed by the components of the apparatus.

A grinding material or product which may be utilized in different forms and comprises laminated layers which interlock with each other when laminated to provide greater tensile strength. Layers of the basic material are formed by sandwiching abrasive particles between two layers of pre-bonded carded fiber. One sheet of a layer is initially passed through an adhesive and later spread in a controlled fashion with abrasive particles. A second sheet of the carded fiber is passed together with the first sheet through a pair of nip rolls which compress the two sheets together with the abrasive particles therebetween and provide a first layer of adhered sheets with the abrasive particles therebetween. Subsequently, the resulting layer may be cut into sections and a plurality laminated together for a desired thickness. In the lamination step, sufficient pressure is applied that the abrasive particles of each layer will enter the interstices of the abrasive particles of adjacent layers and form an interlocking relationship therebetween which significantly increases the tensile strength of the material by virtue of such interlocking of the abrasive particles.

The method further comprises attaching a fastener member to at least one of the front and rear body panels on each of the discrete absorbent garment subassemblies. ELASTIC LEG DIAPER AND METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ITS MANUFACTURE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention is an elastic leg diaper and a method and equipment for its manufacture. A preferred form of the diaper uses for the entire moisture impermeable backing sheet an elastomeric material of the type that is heat unstable and relatively inelastic in its unshrunk form, and stable and relatively elastic in its heat shrunk form. Numerous materials of this type are available. Included among them are block copolymers which include a rubbery material as one component, polyurethanes,and irradiated polyethylene. Diapers made using one of these materials as a backing sheet can be conventionally assembled. After assembly, the marginal areas, which may be either or both of the transverse and longitudinal margins, may be heated to a sufficient temperature for shrinkage to occur in the backing sheet. This shrinkage will only occur when the backing sheet is unrestrained. The method provides for the maintenance of longitudinal tension in the central portion of an end-to-end assembly of diaper units while relaxing the edge tension on the units. This is accomplished in the present diaper making machine by passing the assembly over a series of rollers which are of cylindrical form in the central portion and are tapered at each end. The marginal portions overhang the tapered portion where they are free to shrink after heating. If an elastic waist construction is desired, the diapers are similarly heated in an transverse direction whereupon any transverse tension is relaxed to enable transverse shrinkage to occur. While the preferred diaper uses the heat shrinkable material as the entire backing film, it is within the scope of the invention to insert ribbons of this materialalong the appropriate marginal edges of the diapers and use conventional backing film materials.

A tear notch is provided at the top of each pouch between the heat seal and the top of the ticket to allow transverse tearing to remove the ticket from the pouch. The row of tickets is supplied in a dispensing machine and the strength of the perforations and the tear notch is arranged so that the row can remain intact while it is dispensed and can be easily manually separated without effecting tearing at the notch. To correct mistakes in the numbering, the pouches are separated and are rejoined by a transverse adhesive tape which has a row of perforations along the centre of the tape.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for continuously attaching an elastic member to discrete portions of a moving web to impart an elasticized character to pre-determined portions of the web while preserving the inelastic character of the other portions of the web. A first substantially inelastic web is moved and a plurality of adhesive lines are applied to one surface of the first moving inelastic web. Spaced apart absorbent panels are fed, each panel having a narrowed center portion and wider end portions, to the surface of the moving web on which the adhesive has been applied. A pair of stretched elastic members are fed along the longitudinal edges of the absorbent panel, with the members adjacent the edge of the panel at the center portion thereof and overlying the panel at its wider end portion. A second substantially inelastic web is fed to the top surface of the absorbent panel, and the second inelastic web and the first inelastic web are laminated together at the edge of the panel at the center portion thereof.

A method of producing a succession of self-adhesive labels on a length of release material, which method comprises the steps of:- (a) applying a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive to a surface of a length of release material; (b) applying a succession of individual labels to the layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive so as to adhere the labels to the release material; (c) cutting through each of the labels and the layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive as far as the release material thereby to form the required self-adhesive labels; and (d) removing the waste portions of the applied labels and the waste portions of the pressure-sensitive adhesive which surround the self-adhesive labels from the release material. The present invention also provides apparatus for producing such self-adhesive labels.

Phosphorescent and fluorescent coated sheets and films and coating compositions and methods for making the same in which the coating compositions include a solid phase embodying a phosphorescent pigment and/or fluorescent pigment phase and a socalled hot melt coating or vehicle for the pigment. The coating compositions are applied to a carrier or base sheet by a continuous coating operation, at an elevated temperature, following which the coating composition is transferred from the carrier or base sheet to a polyester or like film, or to a paper sheet or woven fabric, on which it is carried to complete the phosphorescent and/or fluorescent coated film. The phosphorescent products are useful as label stock, highway warning signs and road stripes, identification tapes, which glow at night, on tags, games, clock faces, instrument dial faces and for other purposes and the fluorescent products are useful in the graphic art fields and elsewhere. The continuous coating operation is much more rapid than prior art processes and avoids the use of highly volatile solvents employed in that process and the industrial pollution and other hazards thereto, as well as the extended drying time of the solvents which is required in the use of such prior art methods. Finely divided light-reflective particles, such for example, as glass beads, aluminum foil chips, metal powders and colored plastic resinous particles may also be incorporated in the new coated sheets or films by application to the hot melt coating while the latter is in a soft condition to enable the finely divided reflective particles to adhere thereto.

A method of manufacturing a disposable undergarment includes moving a web of body panel material in a longitudinal machine direction and cutting the web of body panel material along the longitudinal machine direction tothereby form a rear body panel web and a front body panel web each having a maximum rise and a minimum rise respectively. The maximum rise of each of the rear and front body panel webs is greater than the minimum rise of a corresponding one of the rear and front body panel webs. The method further includes shifting at least one of the rear and front body panel webs in the longitudinal machine direction and thereby aligning the maximum rises of the rear and front body panel webs. The method further includes separating the rear and front body panels in a lateral cross direction, such that the maximum rises of each of the rear and front body panel webs are spaced apart in thelateral cross direction and form a gap therebetween in a non-overlapping relationship. The method further includes aligning a crotch member with the maximum rises of the front and rear body panels and connecting the crotch member to each of the rear and front body panel webs and thereby bridging the gap therebetween. A disposable undergarment is also provided.
