In a further modification (Figs. 5 to 8, not shown) suitable for casings which have not been annealed, the die is in two coaxial parts, the outer one moving before the inner one.

A method for placing an edge piece on a battery plate includes bending a thin strip of bendable plastic material into an open top, U-shaped channel. The channel is then cut into an edge piece having a length which is substantially equal to the edge of the battery plate which is to be covered. The edge piece is supported with this open top oriented towards a battery plate that is transported toward it in a manner such that the battery plate edge will be inserted into it. Once the edge of the battery plate has been inserted into the edge piece the edge piece is released so that the battery plate can be carried out of the apparatus. An apparatus for accomplishing this includes a feed mechanism which transports the strip of bendable plastic material.

Preferably, rib-shaving blades are inserted into the case and guided in spaced relation from the rib-bearing walls to remove distal portions of the ribs. Means are provided to detach the shavings from the container at their roots.

In addition, distortions occurring in the original sheet strips can be prevented from affecting each other and the occurrence of wrinkles can be inhibited.

The MEAs can be produced in a continuous roll process. The MEAs can be used to produce fuel cells, electrolyzers and electrochemical reactors.

It is an object of the invention to provide an apparatus for producing a grid for a battery plate which can improve the life performance of a lead storage battery, and in which a lead sheet 4 is prevented from being undulated or causing vibrations in a carrying-out portion of disk cutter rolls 2 and 3, and also a method of producing such a grid. As means for attaining the object, the axis-to-axis distance L (mm) of the two disk cutter rolls 2 and 3 in which a reference circumferential face has a radius r (mm), and which are opposed to each other is in a range of 2r−0.3 mm≦L<2r. The lead sheet 4 which has been passed through between the two disk cutter rolls 2 and 3 is once transported along the peripheral face of the lower disk cutter roll 3, and the lead sheet 4 which is transported only along the peripheral face of the disk cutter roll 3 is pulled out from a position of the peripheral face in a tangential direction to be carried out.

A sealing technique is provided for forming complex and multiple seal configurations for fuel cells and other electrochemical cells. To provide a seal, for sealing chambers for oxidant, fuel and/or coolant, a groove network is provided extending through the various elements of the fuel cell assembly. A source of seal material is then connected to an external filling port and injected into the groove network, and the seal material is then cured to form the seal. There is thus formed a "seal in place", that is robust and can be bonded, where possible, to individual elements of the fuel cell assembly. This avoids the difficulty, labor intensive cost and complexity of manually assembling many individual gaskets into complex groove shapes and the like. The seal material can be selected to be compatible with a wide variety of gases, liquid coolants and the like.

A method of making a lead-acid battery includes providing continuous lengths of end separator stock (24) and intermediate separator stock (26) and stacks of positive (81,98) and negative plates (83,93) with optional use of end separators. The separators are individually severed from the continuous length of stock and sequentially formed into an assembly with the individual positive and negative plates. The assembly is introduced into a battery cell container (28). A plurality of assemblies may be established prior to introduction into the battery cell container (28). In a preferred embodiment, the assembly zone (38) moves linearly relative to the cutting stations for the respective continuous lengths of separator stock and the stacks of plates and facilitates sequential establishment of the assembly without intermediate storage of the individual separators and elements. Some or all of the separators may be supplied from stacks disposed in magazines. The magazines (84,84A,85,85A) may have more than one stack of plates of the same charge to facilitate supply by one while the other is replenished. The stacked plates (81,83,93,98) preferably have their lugs (81 a,83a,93a,98a) aligned. The apparatus includes equipment (98) for supplying continuous lengths of end separator stock (24) and intermediate separator stock (26) and positive and negative plate stacks (81,83,93,98). The separators may be provided from stacks, if desired. A movable assembly zone (38) is adapted to receive the individual separators and plates from which the assembly may be introduced into a battery cell container (28).

This avoids the difficulty, labor intensive cost and complexity of manually assembling many individual gaskets into complex groove shapes and the like. Manufacturing apparatus of electrode for battery, which can produce, continuously and efficiently, a metallic portion having high mechanical strength, high density and excellent electric conductivity on one side of the electrode for battery using foamed metal as core material. Manufacturing method includes: (a) filling active material in foamed metal (1) having voids and supplying electrode material having filled portion (2) filled with active material in the shape of a rectangle, unfilled portion (3) not filled with the active material of slender shape, and a boundary line (4) between the filled portion and the unfilled portion, (b) folding part of the unfilled portion, in parallel to the boundary line passing through the unfilled portion, and at right angle against the unfilled portion, and (c) forming a lead welding portion along the direction of the longer side, by applying, to said unfilled portion bent, a force in the direction perpendicular to the filled portion in a way to crush the voids, and compressing the bent part. Particularly preferably, in said process (c), the height of the unfilled portion is compressed to a thickness no more than about the thickness of the filled portion. The lead welding portion formed this way has high density and high mechanical strength.

For example, a first solid having an alkali metal halide, a second solid having a transition metal, and a third solid having an alkali metal aluminum halide are combined into a mixture. The mixture can be heated in a vacuum to a temperature that is greater than or equal to the melting point of the third solid. When the third solid is substantially molten liquid, the mixture is compressed into a desired cathode shape and then cooled to solidify the mixture in the desired cathode shape.

Ferner ist am Rahmen (12, 13, 15, 17) eine Kontaktfahne (14) zur Verbindung der Elektrode mit einem Batteriepol vorgesehen. Derartige Elektroden werden beispielsweise in Blei-Säure- Akkumulatoren für Fahrzeuge eingesetzt, z. B. als Starterbatterie. Es soll eine Elektrode mit verbesserten elektrischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften sowie Möglichkeiten zu deren Herstellung angegeben werden. Hierfür weist bei der erfindungsgemäßen Elektrode der Rahmen (12, 13, 15, 17) und/oder die Kontaktfahne (14) zumindest in bestimmten Bereichen eine größere Dicke auf als das darin angeordnete Gitter (16). Ferner werden eine Maschine zur Herstellung einer solchen Elektrode sowie ein Herstellungsverfahren angegeben.

The approaches and apparatuses for fabricating cathodes can be adapted to improve control over cathode composition and to better accommodate batteries of any shape and their assembly. For example, a first solid having an alkali metal halide, a second solid having a transition metal, and a third solid having an alkali metal aluminum halide are combined into a mixture. The mixture can be heated in a vacuum to a temperature that is greater than or equal to the melting point of the third solid. When the third solid is substantially molten liquid, the mixture is compressed into a desired cathode shape and then cooled to solidify the mixture in the desired cathode shape.
