The shank is preferably constructed with these features such that the transverse stability of the tool bit is greater than a machine tool bit in which an equivalent reduction in mechanical torque strength is achieved by a mere reduction in diameter of the shank. Technically, the Polar moment of inertia (resistance to torsion) of the modified shank is greater than the polar moment of inertia of a shank with a mere reduction in diameter of the shank. The notches, recesses, grooves, bores or the like may further be filled with a material ( 75 ) to provide additional transverse stability to these one or more regions of reduced mechanical torque strength.

The face miller is equipped with a plurality of plate-shaped hard material cutting inserts that are distributed over the circumference. In order to ensure maximum machining performance at a good service life, the cutting edge angle is selected to range between 10° and 30°, wherein the main cutting edge at the same time has a slightly convex design. The main cutting edge transitions into the secondary cutting edge via a transition radius having a value that ranges between 0.5 and 1.5 mm. The axial rake angle ranges between 20 and 30°. A cutting insert includes an upper surface, a lower surface, a side surface, and an upper cutting edge. The upper cutting edge includes a major cutting edge having an outwardly projecting curvilinear shape, and a minor cutting edge having a straight line shape and being continuous with the major cutting edge. The side surface includes a continuous inclined surface with the major cutting edge and is inclined outward from the upper surface to the lower surface with respect to a virtual straight line connecting the respective centers of the upper and lower surfaces. An inclination angle of the inclined surface with respect to a virtual straight line on the side surface increases from a portion of the inclined surface which is continuous with an end portion of the major cutting edge to a portion of the inclined surface which is continuous with a center of the major cutting edge.

The embodiments described herein relate to methods, systems, and structures for cutting a part to form a highly reflective and smooth surface thereon. In some embodiments, the part includes substantially horizontal and vertical surfaces with edges and corners. In described embodiments, a diamond cutter is used to cut a surface of the part during a milling operation where the diamond cutter contacts the part a number of times with each rotation of the spindle of a milling machine. The diamond cutter has a cutting edge and a land. The cutting edge cuts the surface of the part and the land burnishes the surface of the part to form a highly reflective and smooth surface. Thus, the diamond cutter cuts and burnishes portions of the part, thereby eliminating a subsequent polishing step.

A double-sided, indexable, polygonal turning insert includes a plurality of corners, a peripheral clearance surface, and identical upper and under sides. Along the upper side and underside, primary cutting edges, which individually include a nose edge situated in a corner and two main edges, converge toward the same and transform into auxiliary cutting edges, which separate each pair of primary cutting edges along one and the same side. Chip-directing guide surfaces are placed inside the chip surfaces of the cutting edges. The primary cutting edge has a generally positive cutting geometry such that a wedge angle of the cutting edge between the chip surface and the clearance surface is acute in arbitrary sections along the nose edge, as well as along the two main edges. In such a way, the primary cutting edge produces chips that can be guided in a careful, although distinct, way by the guide surfaces.
