Magnetic-core polymer-shell nanocomposites with tunable magneto-optical and/or optical properties

Methods are disclosed for synthesizing nanocomposite materials including ferromagnetic nanoparticles with polymer shells formed by controlled surface polymerization. The polymer shells prevent the nanoparticles from forming agglomerates and preserve the size dispersion of the nanoparticles. The nanocomposite particles can be further networked in suitable polymer hosts to tune mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of the final composite polymer system. An exemplary method includes forming a polymer shell on a nanoparticle surface by adding molecules of at least one monomer and optionally of at least one tethering agent to the nanoparticles, and then exposing to electromagnetic radiation at a wavelength selected to induce bonding between the nanoparticle and the molecules, to form a polymer shell bonded to the particle and optionally to a polymer host matrix. The nanocomposite materials can be used in various magneto-optic applications.

Graft compositions, useful for tie-layer adhesives, are disclosed. The graft compositions comprise the reaction product of a live, grafted polyolefin and an olefin elastomer. The grafted polyolefin is first made by heating a polyolefin and an unsaturated monomer. Further reaction of the live, grafted polyolefin with an olefin elastomer provides the graft composition. Grafting efficiency is boosted dramatically by the presence of the olefin elastomer and use of the additional reaction step. The graft composition, when formulated into a tie-layer adhesive at low concentration, affords multilayer structures with good adhesion and high clarity.

A primer coating is provided for use on polymeric substrates to enhance the adhesion of metallized coatings to the substrates. The primer coating also improves the gas barrier properties of the substrate when used in combination with a metallized coating. The primer coating includes an amorphous polyvinyl alcohol, polyethyleneimine, and optionally, an aqueous dispersion of polyurethane. The nanocomposite materials can be used in various magneto-optic applications.

A polymer composition comprising an ethylene copolymer , said ethylene copolymer comprising copolymerized units of ethylene , about 5 to about 90 wt % of copolymerized units of a first α ,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid having 3 to 10 carbon atoms; and optionally about 2 to about 40 wt % of copolymerized units of a derivative of a second α ,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid having 3 to 10 carbon atoms; wherein the weight percentages of the copolymerized units are based on the total weight of the ethylene copolymer and the sum of the weight percentages of the copolymerized units is 100 wt %; and wherein optionally at least a portion of the carboxylic acid groups of the copolymerized units of the α ,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid units are neutralized to form carboxylate salts;a hydroxyl-containing crosslinking agent; and a silane adjuvant.2. A product of cross-linking the polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the carboxylic acid groups or carboxylate groups of two or more ethylene copolymers are reacted with at least two of the hydroxyl groups of the hydroxyl-containing crosslinking agent claim 1 , so that the hydroxyl-containing crosslinking agent forms a cross-link between two or more ethylene copolymer molecules.3. The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein about 5% to about 90% of the total content of the carboxylic acid groups present in the ethylene copolymer have been neutralized to form carboxylate groups having counterions.4. The invention provides an adhesive composition comprising a specific grafted long-chain branched ethylene-α-olefin copolymer and either a tackifier or a specific ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, wherein the density, MFR, crystallinity and graft ratio thereof lie respectively within specific ranges. Such a composition containing a tackifier can give a laminate keeping an excellent adhesive strength even in a high-temperature atmosphere together with polystyrene resin, ABS resin, polyacrylonitrile resin or saponified ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer resin, while such a composition containing an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer can give such a laminate together with polyester resin, polycarbonate resin, polyvinylidene chloride resin or saponified ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer resin. For the polymer utilized, the tree rating is generally less than about 40, the power factor is in the range of about 0.0002 to about 0.0005, and the dielectric constant is in the range of about 1.8 to about 2.4.

Disclosed herein are processes for polymerizing ethylene, acyclic olefins, and/or selected cyclic olefins, and optionally selected olefinic esters or carboxylic acids, and other monomers. The polymerizations are catalyzed by selected transition metal compounds, and sometimes other co-catalysts. Since some of the polymerizations exhibit some characteristics of living polymerizations, block copolymers can be readily made. Many of the polymers produced are often novel, particularly in regard to their microstructure, which gives some of them unusual properties. Numerous novel catalysts are disclosed, as well as some novel processes for making them. The polymers made are useful as elastomers, molding resins, in adhesives, etc. Also described herein is the synthesis of linear α-olefins by the oligomerization of ethylene using as a catalyst system a combination a nickel compound having a selected α-diimine ligand and a selected Lewis or Bronsted acid, or by contacting selected α-diimine nickel complexes with ethylene.

A radiation polymerizable protective coating composition or paint, coated articles bearing such a protective radiation polymerizable paint which, on a non-polymerizable solvent, pigment, initiator and particulate filler-free basis, consists essentially of a binder solution of: (1) between about 90 and about 10 parts of a saturated, thermoplastic vinyl polymer prepared from at least about 85 weight percent of monofunctional vinyl monomers; (2) between about 10 and about 90 parts of vinyl solvent monomers for said vinyl polymer, at least about 10 weight percent, preferably at least about 30 weight percent, of said solvent monomers being selected from the group consisting of divinyl monomers, trivinyl monomers, tetravinyl monomers and mixtures thereof; and (3) between about 1.0 and about 15.0 parts per 100 parts of the total of said thermoplastic vinyl polymer and said vinyl solvent monomers of a triester of phosphoric acid bearing one or more sites of vinyl unsaturation. The composition exhibits excellent quality and good adhesion to a variety of substrates, in particular metals, including vapor deposited metals. Preferred articles bearing such a coating are prepared by: applying a base coat to a substrate and curing the same; vapor depositing a coating of metal over the surface of the base coat; and applying to and curing on the surface of the deposited metal the radiation polymerizable topcoat, preferably with little or no pigment contained therein.
