Disclosed is a process for forming a conductive coating of polyacetylene or substituted polyacetylene on fibers. The fibers are immersed into a solution of a catalyst for the polymerization of acetylene or substituted acetylene. The fiber are removed from the solution and acetylene or substituted acetylene gas is permitted to permeate the fibers, polymerizing to form a polyacetylene coating on the fibers. The coated fibers are then doped to make the polyacetylene coating conductive. Also disclosed are conductive polyacetylene coated fibers and a laminate containing conductive polyacetylene coated fibers.

A three-dimensional composite reinforcement, a three-dimensionally reinforced multifunctional nanocomposite, and methods of manufacture of each are disclosed. The three dimensional reinforcement comp.pi.ses a two dimensional fiber cloth upon which carbon nanotubes have been grown, approximately perpendicular to the plane of the fiber cloth. The nanocomposite comprises the three-dimensional reinforcement and a surrounding matrix material. Examples illustrate improvements in the through-thickness mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of the nanocomposite, in addition to substantial improvements in geometrical stability upon temperature changes and vibrational damping, compared to baseline composites reinforced with the two- dimensional fiber cloth alone. Embodiments of the nanocomposite may also be configured to perform multiple functions simultaneously, such as bearing a thermal or mechanical load simultaneously or bearing a mechanical load while also monitoring the state of damage within the nanocomposite.

Carbon fiber mats are embedded in a coating by first rolling on a coating of e.g . epoxy on the floor or wall, then applying sheets of fine carbon fibers, (optionally) removing the carbon fiber which is no t adherent after the coating has dried, then applying one or more additional top coats of coating to additionally embed the carbon fib ers. The result is an electrically conductive floor and/or wall coating system useful in antistatic rooms such as clean rooms, operating rooms, etc. Coatings can be solvent based or waterborne urethanes, epoxies, alkyds, polyethylenes, acrylics, vinyls, vinyl acetates, esters, polyesters, sulfones, polysulfones, silicones, polysilicones and others. The preferred mats are carbon fiber "veils" or "paper" generally having a density of about .75 oz./square yard.

The present invention relates to a covering fabric for covering aircraft. The fabric itself is coated with one or more layers of a crosslinked anionic aliphatic polyester-polyurethane dispersion and/or is woven from coated fibres or filaments. A covering fabric of the invention is glued using a thermoactivatable heat-crosslinking adhesive. An advantage of the covering fabric of the invention is that there is no need for further coating of the fabric after covering, and thus significantly less weight is applied by the covering process. Furthermore, the user is able to apply the covering to an aircraft without using any organic solvents in adhesives, tension-inducing varnishes, thinners, fillers or coloured varnishes, and so an environmentally friendly process is provided for the covering of aircraft.

The present invention relates to a method of making a fibrous electret material which includes the steps of (1) forming a fibrous web of nonconductive thermoplastic fibers from a blend of nonconductive thermoplastic resin and an additive which is (a) a thermally stable organic compound or oligomer containing at least one perfluorinated moiety or (b) a thermally stable organic triazine compound or oligomer containing at least one nitrogen atom in addition to those in the triazine group or (c) a combination thereof; (2) impinging jets of water or a stream of water droplets onto the web at a pressure sufficient to provide the web with filtration enhancing electret charge; and (3) drying the web.

The interstices remain open and the size of the interstices is the same as before the treatment. The filling of the voids between the fibers with the polymer material prevents the absorption of water into said voids and therefore leads to reduced water absorption of the fabric. The microwave energy may be converted into heat by the microwave sensitive material thereby heating the microwave sensitive material and activating regions of the temperature sensitive elastic material adjacent the microwave sensitive material. The activated regions of the elastic material provide the elasticized portions in the composite material. Alternatively, the microwave sensitive material may reflect the microwave energy which may then directly heat and activate the regions of the elastic material opposite the selected regions to which the microwave sensitive material is applied. The method is particularly useful in the manufacture of garment-type articles such as disposable absorbent articles.

A curable halogen-containing epoxy resin composition comprising: (a) at least one epoxy resin; (b) at least one hardener; wherein the hardener is a compound containing a phenolic hydroxyl functionality or a compound capable of generating a phenolic hydroxyl functionality upon heating; and (c) a catalytic amount of a catalyst system comprising a combination of: (i) at least a first catalyst compound comprising at least one nitrogen-containing catalyst compound; and (ii) at least a second catalyst compound comprising at least one phosphorus-containing catalyst compound; wherein at least one or more of the above components (a)-(c) is halogenated or contains halogen; or if none of the above components are halogenated wherein the resin composition includes (d) a halogenated or halogen-containing flame retardant compound that does not contain nitrogen. The stroke cure gel time of the resin composition is maintained from 90 seconds to 600 seconds when measured at 170cC; and the cured product formed by curing the curable epoxy resin composition contains well-balanced properties. The composition may be used to obtain a prepreg or a metal-coated foil, or a laminate by laminating the above prepreg and/or the above metal-coated foil. The laminate shows a combination of superior glass transition temperature, decomposition temperature, time to delamination at 288°C, adhesion to copper foil, and excellent flame retardancy.

The present invention provides fabrics and fabric structures made from spun yarns with reduced water absorption. The at least one spun yarn has a cavity between the fibers filled with a polymeric material. The gap remains open and the size of the gap is the same as before the treatment. Filling the cavity between the fibers with a polymeric material prevents water from being absorbed into the cavity, thus reducing the absorption of the fabric. The polymeric material is substantially only present in the yarns of the yarns and embeds fibers within the yarn outer surface.

The present invention provides for an anti-static flexible fabric material formed from woven, axially oriented crystalline polypropylene yarn, said fabric further characterized as having a coating of a flexible, thermoplastic polymer on one or both sides of the fabric. Anti-static properties are imparted to the fabric by formulating the thermoplastic coating to contain from about 0.2 to about 8% by weight of a polyol ester (preferably glycerol) of a C 10 to C 28 fatty acid. The polypropylene yarn may optionally itself also contain a lesser amount of the polyol ester of a C 10 to C 28 fatty acid to provide a fabric having even more enhanced anti-static properties. In another embodiment, the polypropylene yarn may additionally have interwoven therewith or in contact therewith at intervals conductive yarns to provide even more enhanced anti-static properties. A particular advantage of the fabrics of the present invention is that containers constructed therefrom need not be grounded during filling and emptying operations. As static charges are generated, the electrons can flow across the fabric and dissipate or bleed into the atmosphere almost immediately.

The antistatic agent also may be adapted to provide a sterilized nonwoven web having a surface resistivity in ohms which is lower than the surface resistivity in ohms of the coated nonwoven web before exposure of the coated nonwoven web to the oxidizing gas plasma. The antistatic agent may be an alkali metal or ammonium salt of either a mono- or di-C 3 -alkyl phosphate in which the C 3 -alkyl moiety is an alkyl group containing three carbon atoms optionally substituted with hydroxy groups or a β-carbon substituted alkyl phosphate, a di(β-carbon substituted alkyl) phosphate, or a mixture of two or more of the foregoing. An anti-static flexible fabric material is formed from woven, axially oriented crystalline polypropylene yarn, said fabric further characterized as having a coating of a flexible, thermoplastic polymer on one or both sides of the fabric. Anti static properties are imparted to the fabric by formulating the thermoplastic coating to contain from about 0.2 to about 8% by weight of a polyol ester (preferably glycerol) of a C₁₀ to C₂₈ fatty acid. The polypropylene yarn may optionally itself also contain a lesser amount of the polyol ester of a C₁₀ to C₂₈ fatty acid to provide a fabric having even more enhanced anti static properties. In another embodiment, the polypropylene yarn may additionally have interwoven therewith or in contact therewith at intervals conductive yarns to provide even more enhanced antistatic properties. A particular advantage of the fabrics of the present invention is that containers constructed therefrom need not be grounded during filling and emptying operations. As static charges are generated, the electrons can flow across the fabric and dissipate or bleed into the atmosphere almost immediately.

The composite material of the prevent invention realizes easy manufacture of the prepreg and high bonding of the copper foil. The high-frequency circuit substrate made from the composite material has low dielectric constant, low dielectric loss tangent, and excellent heat resistance, and is convenient for process operation. Therefore, the composite material is suitable for making the circuit substrate.

The present invention provides a fabric and a fabric structure made of yarns with reduced water absorption. The fabric comprises yarns and interstices between the yarns, the interstices between the yarns having an average width of greater than l00µm. At least one of the yarns is comprised of multiple fibers. Said at least one yarn has voids between the fibers wherein the voids are filled up with a polymer material. The interstices remain open and the size of the interstices is the same as before the treatment. The filling of the voids between the fibers with the polymer material prevents the absorption of water into said voids and therefore leads to reduced water absorption of the fabric. The polymer material is substantially only located within the voids of the yarn and has embedded the fibers within the outer surface of said yarn.

The thermosetting resin impregnated fiber plate is then processed to form a polished-piece holder for holding pieces to be polished. The evaluation portion has a certain length in a direction of the average line. The thermosetting resin impregnated fiber plate has a surface roughness with a maximum wave height Ry of 10 μm or greater over an almost entire area of the surface layer. The maximum wave height Ry is determined in an evaluation portion of a wave curve by summing a height Rp of a highest crest and a depth Rv of a deepest trough from an average line of the wave curve. The wave curve is taken from a cross-sectional curve obtained by the surface roughness measuring device.
