The control arrangement is operable to adjust an operating parameter of the apparatus with reference to said signal. In this way, the apparatus operates to improve control of its interaction with the food product, having regard to properties of a particular log of food product.

A straight line shearing mechanism which includes a unique pneumatic control system to cause the operation of the shears. One feature involves the cushioning of the piston member of the pneumatic cylinder assembly on the return stroke. Another feature is the provision of an automatic retract to open the shears in the event that the shear blades do not complete their cutting stroke. Also, one blade of a set of shear blades may tilt in the event of excess tension between the blades. Additionally, one shear blade is pivotally adjustable about a pin member having an axis extending in the direction of travel of the blades. Further, the drop guides are horizontally adjustable relative to its associated shear blade in the direction of travel of the shear blade and also adjustable about a vertical axis.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CUTTING SHEET MATERIAL WITH VARIABLE GAIN CLOSED LOOP A method and apparatus for cutting limp sheet material with a rigid, cantilevered blade that is reciprocated as it advances along a cutting path through sheet material employs a load sensor to measure lateral loads applied to the blade by the sheet material during cutting. A load signal from the sensor is applied to the blade controls through a variable gain feedback circuit and causes the blade to be oriented slightly toward the side of the cutting path from which an unbalanced load is applied. The adjustment of the gain in the feedback network is made by means of speed sensors which measure the rate at which the cutting blade advances through the sheet material and adjust the feedback gain in inverse relationship.

A machine and method wherein a pusher advances a piece of meat to be sliced across the plane of a slicing blade against a backstop. The blade removes a slice from the piece. The difference between the slice weight and a preselected reference weight is used to adjust the separation of the backstop from the plane of the slicing member and hence the thickness of the next slice to be cut from the piece so as to tend to closely conform the weight of the next slice to the reference weight. Clamps hold the piece during slicing but release to allow the pusher to again advance the piece for production of the next slice. ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A registration control circuit for a printed label cutoff machine controls both the location of the cut by performing a phase adjustment and the length of the individual labels by performing a base speed adjustment. A strip of labels have eyemarks printed thereon for defining the location at which the individual labels are to be cut. An optical scanner is positioned adjacent the labels and generates a scanner pulse upon detection of an eyemark. The control circuit includes a setup control for automatically running the machine into registration from an initial setup position. The setup control functions to generate a reference pulse a predetermined distance before the scanner is expected to see an eyemark. When the eyemark is detected within a designated window area the control utilizes the scanner pulse and the reference pulse to calculate the phase error for each label and generate a phase correction signal proportional to the actual phase error. Individual phase error signals are combined to determine the average phase error which has occurred over the last predetermined number of labels. The average phase error is representative of an average base speed error. If the average phase error exceeds a predetermined threshold, the control will generate a base speed correction signal proportional to the average base speed error. When the eyemark is detected outside the designated window area, the control will attempt to bring the eyemark within the window area by peforming a full speed phase adjustment. A machine for cutting lengths of strip or tube from a moving length of strip or tube includes a carriage reciprocable in the direction of movement of the strip and mounting a cutter mechanism operable to sever the strip. The carriage is driven by a motor through a crank mechanism having a rotary input member. The motor speed is controlled so that during a substantial portion of one revolution of the input member the motor speed is constant and during the remaining portion of the one revolution the motor speed is controlled so that the linear speed of the carriage corresponds to that of the strip to be cut. During the latter period the motor speed is controlled in accordance with a plurality of secant values contained in a map.

Apparatus for cutting successive contiguous segments of a lay-up of sheet material 12 has a table 14, an endless conveyor 18 to position the lay-up in the cutting zone of the table, and a carriage assembly 30, 24 which moves a cutting mechanism 32, 34 relative to the table in cutting engagement with the lay-up to cut patterns in response to a programmable controller 28. An encoder 40 on the carriage assembly detects movement of the latter, relative to the conveyor, returning to its starting position after a cutting cycle, and response means 42 energises the conveyor drive motor 20 in response to the detected movement to move the lay-up in the return direction through a distance related to that traversed by the returning carriage assembly, whereby the next segment of the lay-up is accurately positioned on the table. Error sensing means 43 detects an error in positioning the lay-up and alters the data in the controller to nullify the error.
