A rotary cutting device includes a body having a cutter blade with a cutting edge and a pressure roller mounted relative to the cutter blade. The cutter blade is configured to rotate about a rotational axis. The pressure roller is rotationally fixed. The cutter blade and the pressure roller are positioned relative to each other such that pressure is applied to a material fed therebetween. As the cutter blade rotates relative to the pressure roller, the pressure applied to the material being fed therebetween allows for a width of material to cut by a cutting edge of rotating cutter blade. An embossing roller may be used in place of the cutter blade to emboss material. The device also includes guide for guiding material into the machine, pressure adjustment for pressure applied to the material, and rotational speed control. A method for using the rotary cutting device is also disclosed.

The plural knife blades are coupled to a rotational drive by means of plural circular drive gears and are connected to a linear drive for displacing the knife blades into contact with the ply strips for cutting the strips at the predetermined angle. The severed edges of the aligned ply strips are formed in mutual linear alignment and do not include projecting triangular patterns, or crenelations.

The outer end of the shear bar, the central portion of the shear bar and the inner end of the shear bar can all be selectively adjusted while the cylinder is rotating, these adjustments being made from the outer or operator's side of the harvester and at a common location. All of the shear bar adjusting means are located at one convenient and safe area at the outer or operator's side of the machine and the operator can accurately adjust the outer, central or inner end of the bar by noting the "tick" noise created when the particular end or portion of the shear bar being adjusted touches or comes in contact with the rotating knife of the cylinder. This method and structure for permitting the operator to accurately adjust any portion of the shear bar while the cylinder is rotating and to make these adjustments without being endangered by the rotating cylinder results in adjustments which can be quickly and safely made.

Each rotary cutting bar revolves past a stationary straight cutting bar also having a plurality of selectable straight cutting edges, and each cutting edge is positioned at a compound angle relative to planes including the axis of the rotor to produce scissor-like shearing of each strip. Each stationary cutting bar is positioned adjacent a spring biased anvil and is supported with the anvil for remote adjustment relative to the path of the corresponding cutting bars on the rotor. Each edge trimming is fed into the cutting bars by a corresponding pair of feed rollers one of which is spring biased and the other of which is independently driven by a corresponding motor.

A machine for shearing pile fibers from the surface of a textile fabric which is conveyed over the narrow edge of a cloth holder. The cutting is accomplished by a scissors-like action between a stationary cutting blade and a plurality of helical blades which are mounted on a roll which is rotated about a horizontal axis for moving the helical blades into cutting contact of the horizontal cutting edge of the stationary blade. The stationary blade is mounted on a holder which is pivotally mounted on a horizontal axis to enable the stationary blade holder to be pivoted by a drive mechanism to change the relative position of the cutting edge of the stationary blade relative to the cloth holder. The roller for the helical blades is mounted on a rotary blade holder which is supported on the stationary blade holder for movement with the stationary blade holder so that the cutting edges of both the stationary blades and the rotary blades and the helical blades move in unison relative to the cloth holder. The invention also includes apparatus for changing the relative portions of the cutting edge of the stationary blade relative to the cutting edges of the helical blades to compensate for wear of the blades and other conditions which may change the relative positions of the cutting edges of the blades from an ideal cutting relationship. The stationary blade is also provided with apertures to create an airflow through the stationary blade in conjunction with suction means which creates a vacuum in the cutting area. The machine also includes pile height adjusting mechanism for pivoting the stationary blade holder. Miniature video cameras are positioned at the ends of the machine for viewing on end the shearing area of the stationary and rotary blades where the cameras are connected to a video screen which enlarges the image of the cutting area for viewing by the operator and assisting the operator when making adjustment to various settings of the machine.

The present invention provides a web perforating apparatus which includes a system for detecting and indicating when a blade in the apparatus is broken, dull or otherwise not perforating the web. The apparatus is typically used with rewinders or other similar machines that produce perforated sheets of products, such as paper, using sets of stationary anvil blades and rotating perforating blades. The apparatus comprises at least one anvil including a blade holder and an anvil blade which is positioned within the blade holder. The blade holder is formed of an insulating material for electrically isolating the anvil blade from the machine frame of the rewinder. An electrical conductor is coupled to the anvil blade for supplying an electric current to the anvil blade from a current source. The apparatus also includes at least one grounded perforating blade for moving relative to the anvil blade and cooperating with the anvil blade to perforate the web at predetermined points along its length. The perforating blade will contact the anvil blade after perforating the web. A closed circuit is formed and maintained along the anvil blade at points where the blades are in contact with each other. The apparatus further includes means for detecting if a closed circuit has been formed and maintained along the anvil blade when the perforating blade moves into a position where the blades should contact each other.

An improved knife holding apparatus for use with a rotating cutting roll and cooperating anvil roll of the type used to cut elongated sheet is disclosed. The apparatus is attached to the cutting roll and is particularly useful in making transverse cuts relative to the movement of the sheet as it passes between the cutting and anvil rolls. The apparatus has a block with a curved bottom surface conforming with the curvature of a slitting or slotting head to which it is attached. The apparatus also has a holding bar pivotally attached to the block and movable through a limited arc. A threaded bolt tightens a clamp member against a contact surface for holding an elongated cutting knife therebetween and a pair of set screws are operable to adjust the elevation of the cutting knife relative to the holding bar. A resilient shock pad is located between the holding bar and block generally beneath the cutting knife for reducing shock that occurs during a cutting operation.

This invention relates to a rotary cutoff apparatus, which permits easy speed control without needing high-level skill or technique and also allows ready replacement of its anvil member. The apparatus is provided with a knife cylinder, which has a knife arranged on its outer circumferential surface and is rotatably supported, and an anvil member with which a free edge of the knife can be brought into contact upon rotation of the knife cylinder, whereby a travelling band-shaped sheet is nipped between the knife and the anvil member and is hence cut off. The knife is supported on the knife cylinder via a spring having spring force sufficient to bear cutting force required to cut off the band-shaped sheet so that the knife is displaceable in a loaded direction upon cutting off the band-shaped sheet. The rotary cutoff apparatus according to the present invention can be arranged, for example, in a production line for a band-shaped sheet material such as a corrugated fiberboard sheet.

By replacing at least some of the die components with different sizes/types of die components different sizes/types of carton blanks can be produced without requiring the use of dedicated rotary dies for each size/type of carton blank.

A sheet of board passed between the cutting head and an anvil head is cut to form a blank for a box or the like. The cutting block comprises a steel body with a cylindrical barrel holding a cylindrical spring block, to which is mounted a blade holder carrying an elongate blade. The blade moves within a transverse slot across the body and is deflectable into the body and may rock about a midpoint of the slot. Impact forces are reduced, cleaner cuts are produced, and re-setting of the blade is required much less often. An alternative stitch flap cutting block is mountable to the cutting head by a separate side arm, facilitating mounting to cutting heads having different diameters.

The present invention discloses a machine for continuously punching holes in a substrate which is to be used in a skin packaging operation. The machine includes a frame which has a punching roll, which is rotatively mounted by the frame and the punching roll includes a cylindrical shell and a cylindrical center roll. The cylindrical shell is provided with a plurality of openings and fitted in these openings are a plurality of punching pins and these pins are backed up on one end by the cylindrical center roll which prevents them from inward movement. The outer surface of the cylindrical shell is swedged tightly around each of the pins where it exits its respective opening and this prevents outward movement of the pins during normal operation of the machine. The outward end of each pin is pointed to perform a punching function. A rubber backup roll is mounted preferably below and parallel to the punching roll. Means are provided for raising and lowering the punching roll relative to the rubber backup roll so that the outward end of the pins may be positioned relative to the rubber backup roll and preferably are at least in contact with the rubber backup roll. Means are provided for rotatively driving the punching roll and the rubber backup roll. Pieces of substrate are fed into the entrance end of the machine and are removed from the exit end of the machine by means of a plurality of belts which are mounted generally horizontal and parallel with each other. The belts are driven by means of first-drive axles which in turn rotatively carry sheaves which in turn carry the belts. The same construction is provided at the exit end to remove the substrate after they have had the holes punched in them by the aforementioned pins. Ejection rollers are mounted at the exit end of the machine and are adapted to engage the upper surface of the increments of substrate to aid in removing the substrate from between the punching roll and the backup roll. A drive and bearing arrangement for a circular cutting machine is described which is characterized by its high operational reliability, long working life and precise knife guidance. For this purpose a particular bearing arrangement is provided for supporting the knife shaft. The knife shaft is journalled at the knife side via a bearing which is particularly suited to bear radial forces while a bearing unit which can bear both radial forces and also axial forces is provided directly adjacent this bearing. The inner and outer rings of all the bearings are clamped together without play in the axial direction.
