An improved blind cutting machine has a work surface on which a blind to be cut is placed and at least one end stop against which an end of the blind to be cut rests prior to being cut by a cutting mechanism. An actuator is connected to the end stop. The actuator moves the end stop relative to the work surface and the cutting mechanism in response to signals from a controller. An operator enters information about the blind to be cut and the dimensions of an opening over which the blind to be cut is to be mounted into the controller. The controller then calculates the location where the end stop should be so that a sufficient amount of material can be trimmed from an end of the blind to be cut to enable the blind to fit the opening. Then the controller sends a signal to the actuator that causes the actuator to move the end stop to that location. In alternative embodiments the end stop is fixed and the actuator moves the cutting mechanism or a work surface on which the blind to be cut has been placed.

Apparatus for and method of clamping and trimming a perfect bound book

Apparatus for trimming perfect bound books is disclosed including a clamping assembly and a shearing assembly, preferably powered by electric motors. The clamping assembly includes a fixed anvil and a clamp member movable along a clamp track toward and away from the anvil. The shear assembly includes a shear blade movable along a shear track toward and away from the anvil. Load members are mounted on the clamp track and on the shear track. The clamp assembly and the shear assembly each has an electric motor driving a linear actuator (e.g., a drive screw) which is operatively coupled to its respective load member. A spring or a pair of springs is interposed between the clamp load member and the clamp member and another spring or a pair of springs is interposed between the shear blade and the shear load member. Thus, as the clamp member engages the book and as the shear blade shears through the book and engages the anvil, further movement of the clamp member and the shear blade is prevented. Continued operation of the motors causes these springs to compress and to thus result in differential movement (lost motion) between the clamp member and the clamp load member and between the shear blade and the shear load member. Operation of the motors is terminated upon this differential motion of a predetermined magnitude being sensed.

An improved blind cutting machine has a work surface on which a blind to be cut is placed and at least one end stop against which an end of the blind to be cut rests prior to being cut by a cutting mechanism. An actuator is connected to the end stop. The actuator moves the end stop relative to the work surface and the cutting mechanism in response to signals from a controller. An operator enters information about the blind to be cut and the dimensions of an opening over which the blind to be cut is to be mounted into the controller. The controller then calculates the location where the end stop should be so that a sufficient amount of material can be trimmed from an end of the blind to be cut to enable the blind to fit the opening. Then the controller sends a signal to the actuator that causes the actuator to move the end stop to that location. In alternative embodiments the end stop is fixed and the actuator moves the cutting mechanism or a work surface on which the blind to be cut has been placed.

A lever arm is pivoted to, and is axially slidable on, a shaft disposed parallel to the clamping bars and the lever arm carries a cutting head. A pair of blades are mounted in an acute angle relation on the cutting head, and as the lever arm is manually pivoted downwardly, the blades cut a pair of slits in the belt. The lever arm is then pivoted up and advanced axially along the shaft and the cutting action is repeated to thereby cut a plurality of V-shaped fingers in the belt, which can be interdigitated with fingers of a second belt end and subsequently bonded together to provide an endless spliced belt.

A b s t r a c t A machine saw comprises a machine frame, a slotted flat plate rotatable about a vertical axis and serving to receive a workpiece to be sawn, a motor-driven circular saw blade which is rotatable about a horizontal axis of rotation and is adapted to be passed upwards through the slot in the rotatable plate from beneath during sawing, a clamping bridge which is fixed in relation to the frame and spans the rotatable plate and a clamping device mounted by the bridge for clamping a workpiece on the rotatable plate. Part of the clamping device is formed by a clamping jaw movable vertically upwards and downwards and adapted to be set down onto the workpiece, this clamping jaw being rotatable about the axis of rotation of the rotatable plate and displaceable at right angles to this axis of rotation in a sliding guide means.

The apparatus comprises a housing having a pair of opposed side walls closed at their upper edges by a panel spanning the side walls with the panel being slotted between the side walls and depressible at least in the areas of either side of the slotting. Below and in line with the slot is mounted a rodless cylinder operable by air pressure deliverable at one end or the other of the cylinder as determined by a control device mounted on one of the side walls adjacent one end of the slot. A cutting element extends upwardly from the carrier of the rodless cylinder to move therewith. An arm is pivotably mounted on the opposite side wall from the central device and in line with the slot so that when the arm is brought down onto any sheet disposed on the top panel along the slot line, the arm depresses the sheet and underlying areas of the panel and simultaneously triggers the control device to move the cutting element along the slot to sever the sheet pressed down to meet the cutting element as it so moves.

This invention provides a system and method for aligning, feeding, trimming, slitting, rotating, cross-slitting and stacking sheets, each containing one or more discrete page images thereon that allows for greater automation of the overall process so that reduced or no manual intervention is required to generate completed book stacks or “blocks” from a stream or stack of printed sheets. Sheets are fed to a first, upstream trimming station to remove margin edges and optionally separate the sheets relative to the discrete page images. The sheets are then rotated 90 degrees and fed to a second, downstream trimming station that trims the right-angle edges and optionally separates the sheets into a final group of full-bleed pages, removing margins and gutter strips. The sheets are feed to a stacking assembly to be tacked in page order and any rejected, defective sheets or stacks are removed from the order.
