This method of making packets of amorphous metal strip adapted to be wrapped about the arbor of a transformer-core-making machine comprises providing first and second composite strips, each comprising many thin layers of amorphous metal strip stacked in superposed relationship. The composite strips have leading ends that are located in initial positions (i) axially spaced from each other at the start of a packet-making operation and (ii) at opposite ends of a stacking zone where the packets are built up during a packet-making operation. The composite strips are cut to detach first sections of strip from the first composite strip and to detach second sections of strip from the second composite strip; and the detached sections are axially advanced forwardly of the respective composite strips from which they are detached into said stacking zone. The second sections are stacked in alternating relationship upon the first sections in the stacking zone. We utilize for advancing each of the first sections into the stacking zone first transport means that is moved in a first-strip forward direction during said advancing of each of the first sections and is returned to a home position in preparation for each succeeding advancing operation of a first section. For advancing each of the second sections into the stacking zone, we utilize second transport means that is moved in a second-strip forward direction during said advancing of each of the second sections and is returned to its own home position in preparation for each succeeding advancing operation of a second section. Each of the second-section advancing operations is performed concurrently with return motion of the first transport means toward its home position, and each of the first-section advancing operations is performed concurrently with return motion of the second transport means toward its home position.

In a cutting table for sheet metal and the like, the portion of the work that overhangs the table where it is cut is supported on a traveling adjustable support (9) having rollers on its upper surface. As the upper blade is brought down to cut the work progressively from the side near the pivot of the blade to the opposite side, a traveling carriage on which the traveling support is mounted is caused to move along the length of the cut so that it provides support to the work at the location where the blade is doing the cutting. The support is pivoted on an axis perpendicular to the cut so that it can adjust itself to the inclination of the upper cutting blade, the pivot being fixed on a vertically slidable member guided in the carriage. Hydraulically driven pistons enable the support to be raised or lowered with respect to the carriage. Wide cuts can thus be made without the strip that is cut off being twisted, coiled up, or otherwise deformed.

The present invention provides a sheet cutter that can cut the sheet cleanly without being left uncut or torn off in cutting the sheet and is cheap and very compact by reducing the thickness of a movable knife pressure welding member. The sheet cutter comprises a stationary knife including a straight blade part formed like the straight line in the longitudinal direction, a movable knife including a cutting edge part formed in the shape of V-character, opposed to mesh with the straight blade part of the stationary knife, the movable knife being able to freely move toward or back from the stationary knife, a movable knife pressure welding member for pressure welding the movable knife against the stationary knife, and movable knife driver driving the movable knife forward or backward. The movable knife pressure welding member pressure welds the movable knife against the stationary knife by means of a compression coil spring contained inside the movable knife pressure welding member.

A cutting mechanism for accurately cutting a notch in a piece of edging, to permit sharp bending of the piece of edging for a picture or plaque, is disclosed. The cutting mechanism comprises a jig secured to a base member, the jig being dimensioned to receive the piece of edging clamped thereto. A cutting blade is mounted on the base member for reciprocating movement between a first retracted position whereat the cutting blade is remote from the jig and a second fully extended position whereat the cutting edge has passed through the jig. The cutting blade has an inverted "V"-shaped cutting edge comprising two blade portions joined one to the other at a central vertex. A cutting blade guide means retains the cutting blade such that, during cutting ofthe piece of edging retained in place on the jig, the vertex is disposed at a level between the top surface of the jig and the top surface of the second wall of thepiece of edging, so as to thereby permit scoring of the inwardly facing surface of the second wall of the piece of edging. A first blade receiving aperture is disposed in the jig to permit the cutting blade to pass therethrough, and is open at the top to permit the cutting blade to extend therethrough. An actuation handle permits selective movement of the cutting blade between the first retracted position and the fully extended position.

Hydraulically driven pistons enable the support to be raised or lowered with respect to the carriage. The working bench is formed with an escape slot and a middle portion of the working bench is marked with scales. The mold is L-shaped. An upper end of the vertical section of the mold is formed with a forward extending outer slide rail and three perforations with different profiles in accordance with the profiles of the weight board, slat and upper beam of the blind. A horizontal section of the mold is formed with several thread holes. The blade tool mechanism includes a weight board blade tool, a slat blade tool, an upper beam blade tool and two pull bar assemblies. The power mechanism includes an eccentric wheel, a pivot shaft, a handle, two locating seats, a linkage assembly and a pulley. The restriction mechanism includes a thread rod, a restriction bar, two support members and a crank. By driving the eccentric wheel one time, the upper beam, slat and weight board can be respectively sequentially cut off at three stages. Therefore, the cutting operation can be performed with the strength saved.

A block of material such as a clay is fed onto a support comprising spaced apart supports, and a cutting frame, having tensioned cutting wires, is moved in a substantially vertical plane through the block and between the supports so that the cutting wires cut completely through the block without interruption of the cutting motion. The cutting wires lie in a plane extending at an acute angle to the plane of feed of the block. The cut block is then removed from the support. Feeding of the block onto the support and removal of the cut block from the supports occurs in a single plane and are effected substantially simultaneously by means of a pushing device. The method and apparatus of this invention is particularly applicable to the cutting of individual clay batches into a number of individual brick mouldings. An advantage of a preferred embodiment of this invention is that cut portions can be produced without marking of the cutting surfaces and/or the cutting edges of the cut portions.

A cutting tool for truncating elongated structural members. The cutting tool generally includes a frame, at least one cylinder having a cylinder rod, and a blade. The frame generally includes two substantially parallel side rails, a cross member extending between the side rails at one end of the side rails, and an end gate extending between the side rails at the end of the side rails opposite the cross member. At least one cylinder having a cylinder rod is secured to the cross member. The cylinder rod is attached to a blade to facilitate back and forth movement of the blade between the cylinder and the end gate. The cutting edge of the blade has the shape of a wide-angled arrow point. The end gate is equipped with a downwardly beveled cutting edge that extends toward the edge of the blade. As the blade is moved toward the end gate, the edge of the blade and the cutting edge of the end gate work together to sheer a metal structural member placed within the frame. The sheering action completely severs the metal structural member into two separate sections, despite any deformation in the metal structural member.

Apparatus for cutting a tire into segmented pieces utilizes an even multiple of pairs of shear-cutting blades actuated by a hydraulic cylinder ram. The pairs of blades are arranged in radial symmetry, and each pair of blades comprises an upper blade and a lower blade, both of which have a cutting edge defined thereon, such that each pair of blades operates by action of opposed cutting edges. The lower blade of each pair is affixed to a frame, which may be trailer-mounted for mobility. The upper blade of each pair is affixed to a carriage movable on a track secured to the frame, and oriented with the cutting edge disposed at an acute angle relative to the cutting edge of the lower blade. Diametrically opposing upper blades are disposed at corresponding angles, and adjacent upper blades are disposed at different angles from one to the other. Thus, diametrically opposing pairs of blades function to simultaneously engage a tire for cutting and adjacent pairs of blades operate to sequentially engage the tire for cutting. As a result, less force is required to cut an ordinary automobile tire, or a larger tire may be cut with the apparatus.

Cutting is performed by cutting action similar to rolling motion with movement similar to rolling motion. Position at least of one cutting blade is controlled with the control system by controlling the hydraulic fluid flow to hydraulic cylinders according to the specified values of functional ratio of position of cutting blade to time, as well as according to the requirements for total operating force and total return force. For shear-cutting a stack of thin strips of amorphous steel along a cutting plane that extends transversely of the stack, I utilize apparatus that comprises two blades that are positioned at the start of a cutting operation on opposite sides of the stack. Each of the blades has a first surface for engaging one side of the stack and a second surface extending transversely of the first surface and generally parallel to said cutting plane arid intersecting the first surface at a corner. The first surface of each blade is disposed at a predetermined rake angle with respect to a reference plan extending through a point on the corner of the blade and normal to said cutting plane. The apparatus is further characterized by the following features that cooperate to impart to the blades an exceptionally high resistance to wear: (i) the sum of the rake angles is of a negative value and between 5 and 35 degrees, and (ii) both blades are of a cemented carbide cutting material that consists essentially of tungsten carbide particles and cobalt particles compacted under high pressure and sintered at a temperature exceeding the melting point of the cobalt, the tungsten carbide particles being, on average, of submicron size and the cobalt constituting more than 15 percent and about 16 percent by weight of the cutting material.

This method of making packets of amorphous metal strip adapted to be wrapped about the arbor of a transformer-core-making machine comprises providing first and second composite strips, each comprising many thin layers of amorphous metal strip stacked in superposed relationship. The composite strips have leading ends that are located in initial positions (i) axially spaced from each other at the start of a packet-making operation and (ii) at opposite ends of a stacking zone where the packets are built up during a packet-making operation. The composite strips are cut to detach first sections of strip from the first composite strip and to detach second sections of strip from the second composite strip; and the detached sections are axially advanced forwardly of the respective composite strips from which they are detached into said stacking zone. The second sections are stacked in alternating relationship upon the first sections in the stacking zone. We utilize for advancing each of the first sections into the stacking zone first transport means that is moved in a first-strip forward direction during said advancing of each of the first sections and is returned to a home position in preparation for each succeeding advancing operation of a first section. For advancing each of the second sections into the stacking zone, we utilize second transport means that is moved in a second-strip forward direction during said advancing of each of the second sections and is returned to its own home position in preparation for each succeeding advancing operation of a second section. Each of the second-section advancing operations is performed concurrently with return motion of the first transport means toward its home position, and each of the first-section advancing operations is performed concurrently with return motion of the second transport means toward its home position.

Diagnostic strips of the kind which are exposed to biological fluids such as blood or urine to detect or monitor medical conditions are cut sequentially from elongated cards by a reciprocating shear blade. The cards may be ones which exhibit defective areas that should not be included in the finished strips. Blade motion seats each newly cut strip on a movable strip carrier which abuts the blade during the cutting operation. The carrier then travels a nondefective strip to a pickup location where it is precisely positioned and picked off of the carrier for emplacement in a housing. A strip with a defective area is carried further to a discharge location where it is released into a waste receptacle. This enables more economical manufacture of diagnostic strips by efficiently making use of nondefective areas of cards that have defective areas.

The double label web is provided in roll form, is advanced through divider means for splitting the web into like longitudinal strips, and on to a cut-off means where a pair of individual labels are simultaneously removed, one from each strip. A work supporting precision cutting apparatus, for example, an appropriate leg supported table for cutting high pressure laminates expressly designed for use in the cabinet industry, more precisely, laminates which have been sprayed with contact adhesive and which are expeditiously cut into strips designed and adapted to edge cabinet doors. In keeping with prevailing shop practice it has been necessary, as is known, to cut strips from a sheet of pressure laminate Formica, for example, on a support surface using a table saw. Likewise and following the sawing step it is customary procedure to spray the applicable surface of the cut strips with contact adhesive. This manner of accomplishing the result is laborious, time-consuming and perplexing. For instance, if the sheet of laminate is sprayed before stripping on a table saw, chips of laminate stick to the adhesive and virtually make the cut strips useless. An acceptable solution of the prevailing and exasperating problem invokes the use of a double shearing action which, in turn, involves a vertically liftable and lowerable cleaving blade the cutting edge of which is movable between two coplanar closely spaced fixed bed blades, there being no chips and with the result that the discardable and useless piece is freed, cut out and dropped into an accumulating or collecting bin without coming into contact with the strip to be used.

The invention provides a punch press and shearing tool which operate to provide a series of cuts linked end-to-end for severing a work piece such as a piece of sheet metal. The shearing tool includes first and second elongated, cooperating cutting blades. Each of the blades has a pair of slidably related faces that slide against one another in a plane of reciprocation. The cutting edges are oriented at a small angle, e.g. 2° to 6°, relative to one another to sever a piece of sheet stock progressively along a line with a scissor action. An intermittent work piece advancing motor shifts the work piece toward the cutting blades and parallel to the cut when the blades are apart. Gripping members can be yieldably mounted adjacent the cutting blades to grasp and forcefully hold the work piece in place as one blade moves toward the other. Yieldable stripper members on opposite sides of the second blade engage and independently deal with the stock on opposite sides of the cut.

A sheet cutter cuts a portion of a continuous sheet, discharged through a gap between a pair of moving and stationary knives respectively having arc-shaped and straight knife edges. A motor rotates a pair of rotatable, identical gear wheels engaged with each other and opposed to the moving knife and having a pair of respective link arms thereon. Each link arm has a first end connected to a peripheral position of the respective gear wheel by a pivot thereon and a second end connected to the moving knife by a pin inserted into a respective one of a pair of horizontally extending slits in the moving knife. Rotating motion of the gear wheels is transformed into a reciprocating motion of the moving knife against, and relatively to, the stationary knife, in which the second end of each link arm assumes one of two opposing positions, depending respectively upon a current one of opposite rotating directions of the respective gear wheel, such that one or the other rotating direction of the motor results in the reciprocating motion of the moving knife with a stroke either to cut the sheet completely or incompletely.
