The present invention relates to a composition comprising a human placenta extract as an effective ingredient for preventing or treating muscle disease and for improving a muscle function. A composition according to the present invention increases the proliferation of myocytes in an oxidative stress condition, decreases a level of intracellular active oxygen, and upregulates the expression of PGC1-alpha, which is the master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, to increase mitochondrial synthesis. In addition, the composition of the present invention activates autophagy and augments muscle volume in a muscular atrophy model. Therefore, the composition comprising a human placenta extract as an effective ingredient can find useful applications in the prevention or treatment of muscular atrophy or sarcopenia and the improvement of a muscle function.
