After irradiating A549 cells that are non-small cell lunger cancer cells with fractionated radiation, the amount of expression of TSPYL5 and that of ALDH1 and CD44 as cancer stem cell markers are significantly increased. When expression or activation of TSPYL5 is inhibited, it is shown that the amount of expression of ALDH1 and CD44 as cancer stem cell markers is suppressed, and thus the function of EMT, an important path of cancer stem cell growth and metastasis, is significantly decreased and the growth of malignant plasma cells is inhibited. The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating arthritis, containing an extract of an herbal medicine mixture of Schisandra chinensis Baillon, Scutellaria baicalensis and Kalopanax pictus Nakai as an active ingredient. The extract of an herbal medicine mixture of Schisandra chinensis Baillon, Scutellaria baicalensis and Kalopanax pictus Nakai contained in the composition of the present invention inhibits the synthesis and breakdown of extracellular matrix components of chondrocytes containing hyaluronic acid in the joint of a person, which might otherwise generally occur in the joint of a patient suffering from osteoarthritis. The extract of an herbal medicine mixture contained in the composition of the present invention relieves edema and pain which are the cardinal symptoms of arthritis. Therefore, the composition of the present invention containing the extract of an herbal medicine mixture can be effectively used in preventing or treating arthritis.
