The present invention relates to a substrate to be used for a light-emitting diode (LED), having a thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of sapphire, and having good thermal conductivity and electric conductivity, as well as to an LED using same. The substrate for an LED according to the present invention is a substrate that is used for an LED, comprises a compound semiconductor structure formed thereon that includes a p-type compound semiconductor layer, an active layer, and an n-type compound semiconductor layer on a substrate, and also comprises a carbonaceous matrix and metal particles impregnated by diffusion in the carbonaceous matrix. Here, the carbonaceous matrix may be formed of graphite, and the metal particles may be one or more selected from the group consisting of aluminum (Al), copper (Cu), silver (Ag), iron (Fe), molybdenum (Mo), plutonium (Pu), rubidium (Rb), an aluminum alloy, a copper alloy, and a silver alloy.
