The present invention is, in one form, an aqueous alkaline metalworking fluid composition in the form of a concentrate which includes a salt of orthophosphoric acid; a dibasicdioic acid in an amount of up to about 5.0% by weight of the concentrate; an essentially phosphonate-free chelating agent; and, a neutralizing base. The composition may also include a lubricating agent, a coupling agent, a passavating agent, a biocide, and a colorant.

PURPOSE: To obtain a composition preventing the corrosion of ferrous metal and capable of reducing the abrasion of a tool when the ferrous metal is worked by incorporating a chelating agent not contg. an orthophosphate, dibasic acid and phosphate and a neutralizing base in a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION: This corrosion inhibitive composition is free of a harmful nitrite and produced at the same cost as a nitrite-contg. composition and has the corrosion inhibiting property equal to or better than the nitrite-contg. composition. The composition contains 1-10wt.% orthophosphate such as the alkali metal salt, amine salt, alkanolamine salt, etc., of orthophosphoric acid, 0.5-5.0wt.% dibasic diacid such as decanoic diacid, 0.5-6.0wt.% chelating agent such as EDTA substantially free from a phosphonate, 5-40wt.% neutralizing base such as an alkylamine and alkanolamine or further a coupling agent such as a fatty acid, a passivating agent such as sodium tetraborate and a sterilizer such as an alkanolamine ...
