A method for making a zeolite includes impregnating a porous inorganic oxide with a liquid solution containing an inorganic micropore-forming directing agent. The amount of liquid solution is no more than about 100% of the pore volume of the porous inorganic oxide, and the concentration of the directing agent in the liquid solution ranges from 21% to about 60% by weight. The impregnated amorphous inorganic oxide is heated at a synthesis temperature of from about 50° C. to about 150° C. for a duration of time sufficient to form a zeolite-containing product. The method herein is advantageous for the transformation of a mesoporous or macroporous amorphous inorganic material to a composite structure containing the original mesoporous or macropores, but wherein at least some of the porous inorganic oxide material is converted to nanocrystalline zeolite, such as zeolite Y.

Since low acidity refractory oxide-bound catalysts are inherently less active than alumina-bound zeolite catalysts, the former are particularly useful in hydrocarbon conversion processes in which reduced coke make increases catalyst cycle length. Due to their stability in acid environments, the low acidity refractory oxide-bound zeolite extrudate herein can be acid treated without unduly compromising its structural integrity.

Low sulfur gasoline of relatively high octane number is produced from, a catalytically cracked, sulfur-containing naphtha by hydrodesulfurisation followed by treatment over an acidic catalyst, preferably an intermediate pore size zeolite such as ZSM-5. The treatment over the acidic catalyst in the second step restores the octane loss which takes place as a result of the hydrogenative treatment arid results in a low sulfur gasoline product with an octane number comparable to that of the feed naphtha. A catalytically cracked naphtha from the FCC main column (10) is first hydrotreated in a hydrotreater (11) which it enters through inlet (12). From hydrotreater (11), the desulfurised naphtha passes through line (13) to the second reactor (14) in which it is contacted with ZSM-5 or another acidic catalyst, for example zeolite beta or MCM-22 where a controlled degree of cracking takes place with an octane, which was lost in the hydrotreater, being restored. The effluents from reactor (14) are separated and further processed.

The proportion of zeolite beta in the catalyst increases in sequence so that the final bed has the nighest zeolite concentration. The dewaxing activity of the zeolite beta-containing catalysts is enhanced by the use of sequential beds in this manner. The pour point of the high boiling fraction is reduced, as well as that of the distillate product, permitting part of the high boiling fraction to be included in the distillate product, thereby increasing the useful distillate yield.
