A method 500 for tracking an object, such as an vehicle (Fig.4) or person, comprising: receiving video feed 502 from a camera (306, Fig.3); determining a probability of existence (PoE) of an object in a video frame 504; determining whether the PoE falls below a probability threshold 506; determining whether the object is in close proximity to the camera through a set of close-range criteria 508; and adjusting the PoE if the close-range criteria are met 510. Adjusting the PoE may be based upon a difference between a previous frame’s adjusted PoE and the current frame’s PoE (604, Fig.6A). A probability decremental value, that reduces the PoE of an object, may be determined based on the determination of whether the object fulfils the close-range criteria. If the object is near to the camera the PoE is decreased by a first value, if the object is far away from the camera the PoE is decreased by a second larger value.
