Water treatment system

A water treatment system particularly suitable to combat hard water comprises a container (1) through which water flows, the container (1) comprising or containing a first metallic component (2) (e.g. copper) and comprising or containing a second metallic component (3) (e.g. zinc) which second metallic component is higher in the electrochemical series than the first metallic component, the first and second metallic components defining a path through which the water flows (8), an electrical supply means for providing a DC current through the water, an adjustment means (9,10, Fig 2) whereby said DC current can be varied in power magnitude, and a constant current amplifier for detecting the electrical conductivity of the water within the container and for automatically varying the power magnitude of the DC current in response to changes in the electrical conductivity of said water.

A method of indicating the presence of a material in a liquid storage system

A method of indicating the presence (or absence) of a material in a liquid storage system, especially a domestic water-filled central heating system is claimed. A light sensitive indicating means which is fluorescent when exposed to electromagnetic radiation e.g. UV radiation, is introduced into the system and subsequently exposed to electromagnetic radiation. Preferably, the light sensitive indicating means is a fluorescent dye which is combined with a liquid inhibitor or cleaner which may be introduced into the storage system. Subsequently a sample of liquid may be removed from the storage system and then tested under UV radiation to see if the fluorescent dye (and thus the additive or cleaner) is still present. In the case of the additive (e.g. an inhibitor), it would be the presence that would be sought whereas in the case of a cleaner it would be the absence.
