In a radar or communications system, a signal 102 is split into at least two low power signals, possibly by a feed network 104. Each of these signals is encoded, wherein the encoding comprises convolving each low power portion of the signal with a respective different code from a coding waveform generator 111 which may be orthogonal waveforms in the form of Gold Code, code division multiple access (CDMA), or frequency division multiple access (FDMA) waveforms. The coded low power portions of the signal are then summed by summer 115 and the resultant coded signal is transmitted by an antenna element 114 towards a target. An antenna element 116 receives the resultant coded signal reflected from the object, which is then decoded by at least two decoders, possibly by convolving the coded signal with a complex conjugate of a sum of the different codes from coding waveform generator 111a.
