In particular, the invention relates to the case where a GPS receiver is integrated with a transceiver that is capable of communicating with a cellular or PCS network via the air-interface particular to that network. Standard information provided by the network is used to assist the integrated GPS receiver and improve its sensitivity and latency. The result of this improvement is that the receiver can rapidly acquire satellites and compute its position in environments where conventional, stand-alone GPS receivers cannot. This added performance is very important for the emergency location application, since the user may have high expectations for personal safety in a variety of situations. Furthermore, the rapid acquisition reduces power consumption, which is very important for battery-powered devices utilizing such combined GPS and cellular technologies.

In addition, the receiver devices may use the entire navigation message from each satellite to obtain timing information which may further improve sensitivity and possibly remove latency from having to wait for the time-of-week (TOW) field to be received in the GPS satellite transmission. A method and system improves signal acquisition in a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver by providing information to focus the acquisition search in the receiver. In particular, the invention relates to the case where a GPS receiver is integrated with a transceiver that is capable of communicating with a cellular or PCS network via the air-interface particular to that network. Standard information provided by the network is used to assist the integrated GPS receiver and improve its sensitivity and latency. The result of this improvement is that the receiver can rapidly acquire satellites and compute its position in environments where conventional, stand-alone GPS receivers cannot. This added performance is very important for the emergency location application, since the user may have high expectations for personal safety in a variety of situations. Furthermore, the rapid acquisition reduces power consumption, which is very important for battery-powered devices utilizing such combined GPS and cellular technologies.

Methods and apparatuses for routing emergency calls originated from mobile wireless devices in a Voice-over-IP (VoIP) system (10) are described herein. In one or more embodiments, emergency calls are routed in a VoIP system (10) by receiving incoming emergency calls originated from dual-mode mobile devices (12) connected to the VoIP system (10) through wireless access points (WAPs) (14), determining locations associated with the incoming emergency calls, and redirecting callers to a cellular network (38). In other embodiments, emergency calls are routed in a VoIP system (10) by mapping WAP identifiers to emergency answering points (EAPs) (30), receiving an incoming emergency call from an originating WAP (14), identifying an EAP (30) relating to the originating WAP (14), and directing the emergency call to the identified EAP (30).

Methods and apparatus for managing the distribution of data objects (265) in a communication network are disclosed. In an exemplary method, such as might be implemented at a data object server (215), a plurality of data objects (265) corresponding to a first user of a first communication device (205) are stored. State information (270) for the first communication device (205) is received from the first device. The occurrence of a trigger event related to communications between the first communication device (205) and a second communication device (210) is detected, and one of the stored data objects (265) is selected, based on the detected trigger event and the received state information (270), and forwarded to the second communication device (210). In some embodiments, the selection of the data object is further based on an identifier corresponding to the second communication device (210).

Methods, systems and mobile stations are provided which determine GPS timing by collecting energy from transmitted signals from one and preferably more acquired satellites to determine a single timing value, which may increase sensitivity. In addition, the receiver devices may use the entire navigation message from each satellite to obtain timing information which may further improve sensitivity and possibly remove latency from having to wait for the time-of-week (TOW) field to be received in the GPS satellite transmission. This is preferably accomplished by maximizing a single delay metric created based on expected (known in advance from some source) and actual (received) navigation symbols from the acquired satellites. As a result, position fixes may possibly be obtained under disadvantaged conditions where the signal quality from the GPS satellites is poor. Furthermore, the timing information obtained pursuant to the present invention does not require a timing relationship between GPS and communication network time.

Methods, apparatus, and systems are described, in which mobile stations in gaps between conventional cells obtain access to high speed data services by initiating an ad hoc, peer-to-peer connection with an intermediary mobile station and transmitting an access request message to the intermediary mobile station for relaying to a nearby base station. Upon receiving such an access request, a base station determines the approximate location of the mobile station, estimates an angular direction from the base station to the mobile station, and forms a directed antenna beam aimed towards the mobile station for transmission of high speed data to the mobile station. Corresponding techniques in which a base station initiates the establishment of a high speed data link are also disclosed.
