Mixtures of cyclic acrolein glycerol acetals can be obtained in higher volume/time yields than in prior art processes and with very high selectivity from the reaction of acrolein with glycerol in the presence of a solid acid catalyst and distillative working up if the reaction is carried out in the presence of the reaction mixture consisting substantially of acrolein, glycerol, cyclic acrolein glycerol acetals and water, this reaction mixture being used as solvent, and without additional solvents. If necessary, a pH increasing agent may be added to the reaction mixture, after the latter has been freed from catalyst and before it is worked up by distillation, in an amount such that the pH of the reaction mixture in tenfold dilution with water is in the range of from 4.5 to 7. The reaction is preferably carried out at 10 to 30.degree.C, using a strongly acid organic or inorganic ion exchanger.

Small amounts of a solvent by means of which, in particular, oligomers formed are separated off and the tendency for foam to be formed in the apparatuses or columns is reduced is added in the columns and heat exchangers in the work-up process. The solvent is, according to the invention, separated off and recycled in the form of an organic phase in-situ within the existing process.
