An optically-pumped solid state laser system having separate subsystems for cooling its gain medium and optical pumping assembly. The invention permits the operating temperatures of the gain medium and optical pumping assembly to be independently controlled, and permits a substantial increase in cooling efficiency as a result of independent control of coolant flow rates in the two cooling subsystems. In a class of preferred embodiments, the gain medium cooling subsystem includes a first channel through which coolant flows with relatively high flow rate and relatively low temperature (to maintain the gain medium at a desired low operating temperature), and the other cooling subsystem includes a second channel through which coolant flows with a relatively low flow rate and relatively high temperature. In one embodiment, the gain medium is a Holmium:YAG rod, and a Cerium doped glass tube surrounds the rod. Three to four gallons per minute of coolant flows through the tube to maintain the rod at an operating temperature in the range from about + 10 to - 15 degrees Celsius. The optical pumping assembly includes a set of flash lamps, and a Cerium doped glass tube surrounds each lamp. A total of no more than two gallons per minute of coolant flows through the tubes around the lamps, to maintain the lamps at a relatively high (but controlled) temperature.

For high spatial resolution imaging of a structure of interest in a specimen, a substance is selected from a group of substances which have two different electronic states: a fluorescent first state and a nonfluorescent second state; which can be converted fractionally from their first state into their second state by light which excites them into fluorescence, and which return from their second state into their first state; the specimen's structure of interest is imaged onto a sensor array, a spatial resolution limit of the imaging being greater (i.e. worse) than an average spacing between closest neighboring molecules of the substance in the specimen; the specimen is exposed to light in a region which has dimensions larger than the spatial resolution limit, fractions of the substance alternately being excited by the light to emit fluorescent light and converted into their second state, and at least 10% of the molecules of the substance that are respectively in the first state lying at a distance from their closest neighboring molecules in the first state which is greater than the spatial resolution limit; and the fluorescent light, which is spontaneously emitted by the substance from the region, is registered in a plurality of images recorded by the sensor array during continued exposure of the specimen to the light.

Ultrasound analysis technique for bone uses transmitter and multiple receivers producing matrix for analysis and deduction of bone characteristics

The ultrasound probe consists of an ultrasound transmitter (3) and a series of receivers (4) distributed closely along the propagation direction. The excitation level is read on each receiver (4) at each sampling time, thereby providing a spatio-temporal image of the excitations of the receivers. This is analyzed using a Fourier transform, leading to a curve whose shape allows deduction of bone properties. The ultrasound process uses a probe consisting of at least one ultrasound transmitter (3) and a series of receivers (4) distributed relatively closely along the propagation direction. Ultrasound excitations are applied, and the excitation level is read on each receiver (4) at each sampling time, thereby providing a spatio-temporal image of the excitations of the receivers. The image is a matrix within which each column may, for example, correspond to one receiver, and each line may correspond to one sampling time. The matrix is processed with a digital bi-directional Fourier transform to obtain a spatial frequency-temporal frequency diagram. On this diagram the various vibratory modes generated by excitation of the observed medium form curves, and some geometrical features of these curves enable geometrical or mechanical characteristics of the observed medium to be deduced.

A power transfer circuit includes first and second windings (L1,L2) sharing a common magnetic core (101). Each winding (L1,L2) has associated with it a parallel capacitor (C1,C2) to thus form a pair of "tank" circuits. The first winding (L1) is connected at one end to a voltage supply and, at the other end, to ground through an FET switch (100,200). The switch (100,200) is turned on and off at a predetermined frequency and at a 50% duty cycle. The second winding (L2) and associated capacitor (C2) achieves parallel resonance at the predetermined frequency. Similarly the combined first and second windings (L1,L2) and associated capacitors (C1,C2) achieve parallel resonance at said predetermined frequency. The second winding (L2) need not be electrically connected to the first winding (L1) which transfers energy to it through the magnetic core (101). The transfer circuit efficiently couples power across a dielectric interface to a pickup coil (L3). One particularly good application of the power taansfer circuit is in connection with a contactless Smart Card.

A method for protecting a metal surface from galling and corrosion includes a step of providing a protective dry film on the metal surface. The film includes a solid lubricant and a conducting polymer, the conducting polymer having lubricant properties and being capable of binding the solid lubricant to the metal surface. Threaded metal joint surfaces coated with the film are capable of resisting galling under high pressure and high torque conditions, even after several fastening and unfastening operations or over a long period of time. Protection from corrosion is also provided by the film. The method and film are economical in that only a single layer of protective compound need be applied in order to provide metal surfaces with both lubrication and protection against corrosion, and problems such as removal or leakage, which are associated with protective compounds that use oils, are avoided. Additionally, the dry film is advantageous because it does not contain heavy metals that are harmful to the environment.

A power transfer circuit includes first and second windings (L1,L2) sharing a common magnetic core (101). Each winding (L1,L2) has associated with it a parallel capacitor (C1,C2) to thus form a pair of "tank" circuits. The first winding (L1) is connected at one end to a voltage supply and, at the other end, to ground through an FET switch (100,200). The switch (100,200) is turned on and off at a predetermined frequency and at a 50% duty cycle. The second winding (L2) and associated capacitor (C2) achieves parallel resonance at the predetermined frequency. Similarly the combined first and second windings (L1,L2) and associated capacitors (C1,C2) achieve parallel resonance at said predetermined frequency. The second winding (L2) need not be electrically connected to the first winding (L1) which transfers energy to it through the magnetic core (101). The transfer circuit efficiently couples power across a dielectric interface to a pickup coil (L3). One particularly good application of the power taansfer circuit is in connection with a contactless Smart Card.
