A Security Manager Device 16 employs a transmitter (22, fig. 2) requiring close proximity to a client device 10-14, such as a line-of-sight laser or infra-red source or a near-field wireless antenna, in order to set up and authenticate a secure wireless channel without requiring direct physical contact with both devices. Network authentication information such as identities, encryption keys and user security levels are stored in the device (20), use of which is controlled by a biometric verification device (30) or keypad (26) and which is small enough to attach to a key ring. This avoids the risks in current Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) systems of the network key being stolen, and of client devices or networks (since many wireless networks may overlap) being misidentified.

In a process for spinning an aromatic polyester comprising :-(a) extruding a filamentary stream at a controlled linear speed in the molten state, (b) cooling such stream from its initially molten state through an intermediate plastic state to a solid state, and (c) hauling off such solidified filament at a higher controlled linear speed, a method of reducing the optical birefringence of such solidified filament comprises: (i) applying a forwarding force to such filamentary stream in a region in which it is in such intermediate plastic state, (ii) the forwarding force being sufficiently small such that the filament tension between the point of application of the forwarding force and the point of hauling off is always positive. The forwarding force may be applied by at least one driven roller, which may be heated. The forwarding force may be applied by a fluid drag, e.g. by an air ejector. The polyester may be polyethylene terephthalate. As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, a spinning pack 11 with a spinneret 12 at its base, extrudes filamentary streams 13 which at first are subjected to delayed cooling in the region 14 which is partially enclosed in the thermostated box 15 used to heat the pack 11. An air ejector 16 surrounds the threadline at a point between the spinneret 12 and a spin finish applicator 17. The filaments are wound up on a bobbin 18. As shown in Fig. 2, a suitable form of air ejector comprises a short wide bore Venturi tube 21 held by a screw-thread in a casing member 22 with an air inlet duct 23 connected to a compressed air supply line 24 by a valve 25. An ultra wideband antenna comprises a substrate (21 ). A metal layer deposited on the substrate comprises first and second non-metallic regions (22a, 22b) defined therein. There is provided a method of detecting offset in a sense amplifier of an SRAM memory unit. The method comprises using a sense amplifier of the SRAM memory unit to implement a read of a first data value stored in a memory cell of the SRAM memory unit, and measuring a first time for the sense amplifier to read the first data value. The method further comprises using the sense amplifier to implement a read of a second data value stored in a memory cell of the SRAM memory unit, and measuring a second time for the sense amplifier to read the second data value. The method then comprises calculating a difference between the first time and the second time, and determining whether an offset adjustment should be applied to the sense amplifier in dependence upon the difference between the first time and the second time.
