A bayonet connector with a sprung shut off valve

A bayonet connector for domestic water pipes comprises two sections, one section having a valve 4 which is closed when the sections are disconnected. The valve 4 has a perforated valve cage 6 and a spring 5 against which an actuator 7 pushes when the sections are connected. A transverse pipe may be connected (fig 2). The sections are sealed by a rubber O ring 2 and a pressure spring 3 in a groove in one section. The connector may be used to connect a radiator.

The tap 7 is inserted into a fixed base which incorporates a valve 6 preventing the flow of water until the tap is connected. The tap can be fitted and changed as required without the use of tools or the need to turn off the water supply. Ideally the base for this tap will be integrated into the bath basin sink or any other appliance that requires a tap. The tap and base preferably have a bayonet type arrangement comprising cooperating grooves 1 and lugs 4.

A domestic tap can be easily be inserted into a base which incorporates a valve 4 preventing the flow of water when the tap is not present. The valve 4 is sprung against a lip 9 when closed, but is depressed by an actuator 7 when the tap is present. Water can then flow through perforations in a valve cage 6 and around actuator 7. The tap is sealed to the base by a rubber O ring 2 and pressure spring 3 in a groove in the base. The tap can be fitted or changed without tools or turning off the water supply by a bayonet type arrangement comprising cooperating grooves and lugs 1. The base may be fitted to, or moulded integrally to a bath, basin or sink. Appliances such as washing machines, dish washers or garden hoses may also be attached to the base in place of the tap. The base may have a speed fit connector (5, fig 1).
