Heat-shrinkable polymeric films

The present invention relates to oriented or hot-blown shrink films which may be manufactured from by a number of processes. The oriented films may be manufactured by double bubble, LISIM, tape bubble, trapped bubble or tenter framing processes. The films of the present invention are useful as a shrink film to package and label a variety of products. The films exhibit a high degree of MD shrinkage in a very controlled and consistent manner while providing a number of other positive characteristics such as optical clarity, puncture and abrasion resistance, controlled gauge, and superior web winding and handling characteristics. The shrink control layers of the films of the present invention contain a modifier component selected from plastomers and/or metallocene catalyzed ethylene-propylene copolymers and blends thereof.

The shrink during the application on packaging machines is achieved through the balanced MD-TD (machine direction and transverse direction) film retraction in and near the sealed areas. The substrate can also include outer layers of a propylene-ethylene-butylene terpolymer disposed on either side of the polypropylene core layer or on either side of additional intermediate layers that may be disposed between the outer layers and the core layer. The invention also includes a process for making this coated heat-shrinkable film. The coated film is formed under controlled temperature and tension conditions to produce a packaging film having shrinkage within a controlled shrinkability range.

A squeezable, white polypropylene film is disclosed having a novel balance of conformability, stiffness, modulus, opacity, and whiteness. The film comprises an ABCBA structure having a core layer of polypropylene resin with an elastomeric copolymer and a cavitating agent. Two intermediate layers of polyproplene resin are present on either side, the intermediate layers optionally comprising an elastomeric copolymer and a pigmenting agent. Two polymer skin layers surround the two intermediate layers. The resins are co-extruded into a biaxially oriented film having a thickness between 40 to 70 μm for use in pressure-sensitive labeling applications. 1. A biaxially oriented , conformable , multilayer film comprising:a core layer comprising polypropylene resin, an elastomeric copolymer, and a cavitating agent, the core layer having a first side and a second side;a first and second intermediate layer located on the first and second side, respectively, of the core layer, the first and second intermediate layers comprising a polypropylene resin; anda first and second skin layer, located on the first and second intermediate layers, respectively, opposite the core layer,wherein the biaxially oriented, conformable, multilayer film is at least 70% opaque and exhibits no creasing after ten cycles of deflation/inflation of a bottle with a label adhered thereto, wherein the label comprises the biaxially oriented, conformable, multilayer film.2. The oriented films may be manufactured by double bubble, LISIM, tape bubble, trapped bubble or tenter framing processes. The films of the present invention are useful as a shrink film to package and label a variety of products. A squeezable, white polypropylene film is disclosed having a novel balance of conformability, stiffness, modulus, opacity, and whiteness. The film includes an ABCBA structure having a core layer of polypropylene resin with an elastomeric copolymer and a cavitating agent. Two intermediate layers of polypropylene resin are present on either side, the intermediate layers optionally including an elastomeric copolymer and a pigmenting agent. Two polymer skin layers surround the two intermediate layers. The resins are co-extruded into a biaxially oriented film having a thickness between 40 to 70 pm for use in pressure-sensitive labeling applications.

Disclosed are compositions, methods, and uses for multi-layered films which are intended to provide high quality sealants having sufficient sealing strength for use in packaging and other applications while being more cost-effective and higher-yield than traditional combinations of unoriented polyolefin films and web materials. The film comprises a multilayer structure of LLDPE having a core layer, a surface skin layer, and a sealant skin layer. The core layer further comprises a slip agent, while the skin layers further comprise antiblock agents. Optional embodiments may include tie layers between the core layer and the skin layers, or may include pigments in one or more of the core layer or tie layers. The surface skin layer may be subjected to a surface treatment (e.g., corona treatment) to improve suitability for coating or metallization.
