There is provided an apparatus and method for transferring data packets from a peripheral module to a memory via a memory-controller. When a given peripheral module requests that it send a data packet to the memory via the memory-controller, the memory-controller sends an acknowledgement indicating that the peripheral module can send the data packet, whether or not there is a descriptor for the data packet. If there is a descriptor, the memory-controller receives the data packet from the peripheral module and stores it in the memory. If there is not a descriptor, the memory-controller discards the data packet as it receives it. Thus, whether or not there is a descriptor available for the data packet, the peripheral module still sends the data packet to the memory-controller. The data packets may be assigned classifications and each classification may be assigned a dedicated space in the memory.

When the precursor comes inside live cells by an uptaking mechanism on the cell membrane, the cleavable motif is then to be removed by an enzymatic action of a first enzyme. Without the cleavable motif, the precursor now engages in a self-assembling process to form nanostructures within the live cells, which may cause formation of a hydrogel. Furthermore, the self-assembling process can be made reversible by employing a second enzyme which puts the cleavable motif back to the precursor, whereby dissolving the nanostructures into solution.

The synthesis of thiophene based conducting polymer molecular actuators, exhibiting electrically triggered molecular conformational transitions is reported. Actuation is believed to be the result of conformational rearrangement of the polymer backbone at the molecular level, not simply ion intercalation in the bulk polymer chain upon electrochemical activation. Molecular actuation results from π-π stacking of thiophene oligomers upon oxidation, producing a reversible molecular displacement that leads to surprising material properties, such as electrically controllable porosity and large strains. The existence of active molecular conformational changes is supported by in situ electrochemical data. Single molecule techniques have been used to characterize the molecular actuators.

Disclosed is a general methodology to create nano fibers of therapeutic molecules that have a dual role, as both the delivery vehicle and the drug itself. It is shown that with proper molecular design, the integration of enzymatic reaction and self-assembly provides a powerful method to create molecular hydrogels of clinically-used therapeutics without compromising their bioactivities. In addition, the results disclosed herein demonstrate enzyme-instructed self-assembly as a facile strategy for generating the supramolecular hydrogels of molecules that inherently have poor solubility in water. For example, by covalently connecting paclitaxel with a motif that is prone to self-assemble, a hydrogel of paclitaxel can be formed without compromising the activity of the paclitaxel.

The method may further comprise the additional step of removing said complexes. The biofunctional magnetic nanoparticles are preferably a conjugate of vancomycin and FePt. The pathogens may be bacteria or viruses, and the sample may be a solid, liquid, or gas. Detection may involve conventional fluorescence assay, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), optical microscope, electron microscope, or a combination thereof. The sensitivity of detection for the method is at least as low as 10 colony forming units (cfu) of the pathogens in one milliliter of solution within one hour.

A method of creating intracellular artificial nanostructures in situ, which employees a chemical precursor. The precursor does not self-assemble due to the presence of a cleavable motif linked to it. When the precursor comes inside live cells by an uptaking mechanism on the cell membrane, the cleavable motif is then to be removed by an enzymatic action of a first enzyme. Without the cleavable motif, the precursor now engages in a self-assembling process to form nanostructures within the live cells, which may cause formation of a hydrogel. Furthermore, the self-assembling process can be made reversible by employing a second enzyme which puts the cleavable motif back to the precursor, whereby dissolving the nanostructures into solution.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a member of a large family of incretin hormones secreted in nutrient-dependent response. GLP-1 acts on GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1 R) that is highly expressed on pancreatic β-cells. The peptide has great potential for development of diabetes treatment and diagnosis. However, the pharmaceutical effects of the peptide suffer from in vivo instability and short life due to degradation by Dipeptidylpeptidase-1 (DPP-4). The 30 amino acid peptide GLP-1 has been integrated into a stable host protein human calbindin D9k. The fusion protein binds to GLP-1 R as demonstrated by immunostaining analyses of GLP-1 R expressing cells. The fusion protein agents can be useful for both diabetes treatment and GLP-1 R receptor targeting MR imaging. The fusion protein has a size about 14 kDa, which enables efficient tissue penetration and retention, and an extended circulation time, is stable, remaining intact and retaining activity after 48 hours incubation with 75% human serum. The protein retains its native folded structure after boiling for ten minutes forming the basis of an experimental protocol for large scale production of the fusion protein (>30 mg/l bacterial culture). No toxicity has been observed with tests on mice. One aspect of the disclosure, therefore, provides a fusion protein comprising a first peptide characterized by selectively binding to a site of a target cell and linked to a second peptide, where the fusion protein is more stable than the first peptide alone. In embodiments of this aspect of the disclosure, the fusion protein may further comprise a detectable label attached thereto. Disclosed herein are architectures for VCSEL systems. By using high power IR VCSEL element(s), a bulk doubling material can be used to double the IR light and generate visible light (red, green, blue, or UV light) in a cavity, in either continuous wave (CW) or pulsed mode. The reflectivity of the output distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) of these VCSELs can be designed to increase the power in the cavity, rather than the power in the VCSEL laser. By enabling the use of a bulk doubling material in the cavity and directly doubling the VCSEL the device can be inexpensive, simpler, high efficiency, better reliability, and vastly improved manufacturing and alignment tolerances. There are a number of cavity architectures that can be used to double the IR light from the VCSEL(s). The VCSEL(s) can be single elements, or arrays with high intensity elements.
