An ignition system comprises a capacitor C connected to a charging circuit and to a discharging circuit, the latter circuit including an inductance L in series relationship with two parallel connected but oppositely poled rectifiers RFI, RF2 of which one is controlled. Preferably means for triggering the controlled rectifier is provided. In a modification the inductance is provided by the primary winding of a transformer the secondary of which is connected to the sparking plug. The controlled rectifier may have one or more additional controlled rectifiers connected in series with it. At least one of the additional controlled rectifiers may be controlled by triggering. The rectifier triggering means can operate on a conventional time basis or it can be responsive to the capacitor charge voltage. The plug may be of the surface discharge type.

[Also in Group XXVI] In an apparatus for producing a supply of working fluid for the operation of a prime mover 12 by decomposition of a mono-fuel, a conduit 11 leads from a breech 10, in which a charge of deflagrant such as cordite may be fired, to the prime mover. The conduit is provided near the breech with an inlet 13 for the supply of mono-fuel thereto, combustion of the mono-fuel being initially caused by the hot combustion products produced by firing the cordite in the breech. Mono-fuel is supplied from a tank 14 to the space below the piston 19 of the pressure intensifier 17, the space above the piston 19 being connected by a pipe 21 to the conduit 11.
