An image 402 of an original object is captured and an associated machine readable identifier is synchronously read. The image and its associated identifier are stored in an image database 300. An image 404 of a subsequent object whose machine readable identifier is either unavailable or incapable of being scanned is identified by comparing its image with similar images in the database. Identification information 406 based on a machine readable identifier associated with the image of the original object is output in response to recognising the object relative to other images in the database. The machine readable identifier can be a barcode or radio-frequency identification.
