Axles axle-trucks or undercarriages.-In railway or other wheeled vehicles &c., the axle friction is reduced by means of electro-magnets which tend to counteract the action of gravity. Fig. 1 shows the axle 1 of a railway vehicle on which is mounted near the face of each wheel 2 an armature 3, separated by a small air-gap from the poles 5 of an electro-magnet, which is energized by means of coils 6. The armature 3 consists of a number of alternate iron and non-conducting disks or segments held out of contact with the axle by end plates 7 and insulated bolts 9 The magnets are fixed on or formed with a bar 4, the ends of which skirt the wheels 2 and are attached to the axle-boxes. Fig. 5 shows an axle-box designed to take up wear of the brasses in order to maintain a constant distance between the armatures and the magnets. The brasses 18 are adjustable by means of screws 23 and wedges 19 bearing against wedgeshaped flanges on two side frames 16, Fig. 7, each frame having a flange 17 which is inserted and bolted between flanges on the upper and lower parts 13, 14 of the axle-box 11. Proper adjustment is indicated by the relative positions of two studs 21, 22 fixed on the journal 20 and the casing 13. If it is desired to utilize the power of magnetic repulsion instead of magnetic attraction, the magnets are placed above instead of below the axle, and the axle or an attachment thereon is magnetized to produce repulsive force. The bar 4 may be dispensed with and magnets mounted on the axle-box. The invention may be applied to wheels revolving on fixed axles, in which case the armature is mounted in the hub and the magnet is carried by the axle. An armature and magnet may be placed at each side of a wheel.
