A flooring system 1 for generating electricity from pedestrians, comprising a plurality of generators 100, each generator having a support which supports a plurality of tiles 200. Each generator generates electricity from linear motion of the support in a first direction. Also disclosed are several related inventions, whereby sensors are used in place of the generators and combined with a processor. The system is arranged to estimate the location of a footstep, direction of a users motion based on time differences, or direction of a users motion based on magnitude of the signal. Two further disclosed inventions include electromagnetic receivers and transmitters associated with a mobile communications device for transmitting information from the sensors. The tiles are preferably triangular, are supported at each corner and may include a frame around the periphery of each tile.

The flooring system 1 is for characterising a footstep and comprises: a number of tiles 200 for supporting people and a number of sensors that generate a signal depending on a force applied to the sensor. Each tile is supported by three sensors. The flooring system includes a data processing system in communication with each sensor for receiving the signal. The data processing system is arranged to produce output data by comparing the signals received from the various sensors supporting that time to estimate the location of a footstep. Also claimed are flooring systems for monitoring a footstep walking across a flooring system by either timing or measuring maximum force magnitudes. Also claimed is a flooring system with a number of receivers for receiving identifiers received via mobile communications devices. Also claimed is a flooring system with a number of electrical generators 100. The electricity is generated by linear motion of a support for the generator.
