A bleach activator of the type commonly used in laundry detergents is used to activate a peroxygen bleach used to sterilise a prosthesis removed from the body before reinsertion. In one variant the metal is contacted with the solution in a cleaning bath which is preferably agitated or stirred and made of a plastic material. The surfactant may be a secondary alkane sulphonate, a linear alkyl bezene sulphonic acid, an alkyl ethyl sulphate, an olefin sulphonate or a primary alcohol (C<SB>13-15</SB>) ethoxylate, ethoxylated with 5-9 moles of ethylene oxide.

A method of measuring the fluorescence of a fluorescent marker compound dissolved or dispersed in a bulk material includes: (a) measuring a characteristic of the fluorescence of a mixture of said bulk material and said fluorescent marker compound; (b) quenching the fluorescence of the fluorescent marker compound to produce a quenched mixture; (c) measuring the characteristic of the fluorescence of the quenched mixture; (d) comparing the fluorescent characteristic of the mixture with the fluorescent characteristic of the quenched mixture; and (e) correcting the measured fluorescent emission characteristic for the effects of the absorbance of the bulk material. The measurement may be further corrected to account for the absorbance of the material which is also known to have an effect on the measured fluorescence. A method of tagging and identifying a bulk material with a fluorescent marker compound, and an apparatus for carrying out the methods are also described.

A disinfectant system is supplied in two packs, which when mixed together and diluted provides a disinfectant solution having the active peroxyacid disinfectant present at a suitable level. The system includes a first pack having a pH of from 7-9.5 and containing hydrogen peroxide, an alkali metal borate salt, and a peroxide solution. The second pack having a pH of from 6-10, has an activator - which reacts with hydrogen peroxide to generate the peroxyacid - a structuring electrolyte and a surfactant. Suitable ratios of first to second pack suitable are from 1:100 to 100:1 by weight. A corrosion inhibitor is included where the disinfectant is to be used in respect of metal surfaces. In order to activate the borate a diol containing compound is included which engages with the borate and assists in its solubilisation.

Measuring the amount of SERS-active taggant compound in an organic liquid sample comprises: mixing said sample with an immiscible liquid; separating the mixture into a first phase comprising the immiscible liquid and a second phase comprising the organic liquid sample; treating the first phase to remove trace compounds of the organic liquid, and diluting it; contacting the diluted and treated first phase with a SERS substrate and subjecting them to Raman spectroscopy in the presence of an internal standard compound; and calculating the ratio of the Raman spectroscopy detector responses to the taggant and the internal standard. In aspects, this ratio is compared to a value obtained for a reference material containing a known amount of taggant to compare the organic liquid sample with the reference sample and determine whether the former is a sample of the latter. The method is particularly useful for identifying and detecting adulteration of a sample of hydrocarbon fuel.
