Disclosed are calibration techniques that can be implemented by a device that conducts biological tests. In certain embodiments, the device for testing a biological specimen includes a receiving mechanism to receive a carrier, a camera module arranged to capture imagery of the carrier, and a processor. Some examples of the processor can detect a calibration mode trigger. In calibration mode, the processor can divide the captured imagery into segments and selectively perform one or more calibration procedures for each segment. Then, the processor records a calibration result for each segment. 1. An apparatus for testing a biological specimen , the apparatus comprising:a receiving mechanism to receive a carrier;a camera module arranged to capture imagery of the carrier; and utilize the camera module to capture the imagery of the carrier;', 'divide the captured imagery into segments;', 'selectively perform one or more calibration procedures for each segment; and', 'record a calibration result for each segment., 'a processor that, upon detecting a calibration mode trigger, causes the apparatus to enter a calibration mode, wherein the processor is configured to2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more calibration procedures include:determining an image quality for each segment; anddetermining whether a given segment satisfies an image quality minimum requirement.3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein claim 2 , upon determining that the given segment fails to satisfy the image quality minimum requirement claim 2 , the calibration result for the given segment is recorded as failed.4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the processor is further configured to:during normal operation, discounting segments that failed the image quality minimum requirement during the calibration mode.5. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the image quality includes one or more of: focus level claim 2 , color distortion claim 2 , pattern distortion claim 2 , and/or clarity defect.6. The ...
