Each conductive element may have a contact portion curving inwardly relative to the opening and a tip extending from the contact portion towards the mating end. Each contact portion may form an electrical connection with an edge pad of a card to be inserted into the opening. The conductive elements may be configured to have a rest state in order to create a proper force to be exerted on the edge pads. The member may preload the conductive elements by contacting the conductive elements from a location farther from the mating end than the contact portion, which may avoid damage upon insertion of a card into the connector without the need for long tips of the conductive elements. As a result, the connector may operate at high frequencies.

Methods for setting contact height in an electrical connector are disclosed. Each of a plurality of electrical contacts may be seated in a connector housing such that each contact has a respective initial height relative to the housing. At least one of the contacts is pressed on such that, after the pressing, each of the contacts has approximately the same height relative to the connector housing. The pressing may bend the at least one contact at least until it has set. Before the pressing, the initial contact heights have a first tolerance. After the pressing the pressed contact heights have a second tolerance that is smaller than the first tolerance. The pressing operation bends the contacts to a point that exceeds the yielding limit of the contact material, and may deform the contacts such that the several contacts have about the same contact height relative to the connector housing.

Such methods may be particularly suitable for connectors having larger near-end crosstalk aggressors than far-end crosstalk aggressors. The electrical signal contacts may be subdivided on a substrate, such as a midplane PCB, and through the opposing connectors, such that the transmitting contacts are all on one side of the connector and the receiving contacts are on the other side of the connector, with a buffer between them. The buffer may comprise a plurality of “dummy” or “buffer” contacts, which may be unassigned or devoid of electrical connectivity. This is one step beyond the primary assignment of contacts as single-ended or differential signal contacts. The contacts themselves may also receive a secondary assignment according to their desired transmitting, receiving, or buffering function.

The electrical signal contacts may be subdivided on a substrate, such as a midplane PCB, and through the opposing connectors, such that the transmitting contacts are all on one side of the connector and the receiving contacts are on the other side of the connector, with a buffer between them. The buffer may comprise a plurality of dummy or buffer contacts, which may be unassigned or devoid of electrical connectivity. This is one step beyond the primary assignment of contacts as single-ended or differential signal contacts. The contacts themselves may also receive a secondary assignment according to their desired transmitting, receiving, or buffering function.

A first one of the beams extends outward in a first direction as the first beam extends forward from the main section and has a contact surface facing the first direction. Two second ones of the beams are located on opposite sides of the first beam and extend outward in a second opposite direction as the second beams extend forward from the main section. A card edge connector with an improved manner of creating a preload force on conductive elements held by a housing. The housing may include a member and an opening at a mating end. Each conductive element may have a contact portion curving inwardly relative to the opening and a tip extending from the contact portion towards the mating end. Each contact portion may form an electrical connection with an edge pad of a card to be inserted into the opening. The conductive elements may be configured to have a rest state in order to create a proper force to be exerted on the edge pads. The member may preload the conductive elements by contacting the conductive elements from a location farther from the mating end than the contact portion, which may avoid damage upon insertion of a card into the connector without the need for long tips of the conductive elements. As a result, the connector may operate at high frequencies. 1. Methods for setting contact height in an electrical connector are disclosed. Each of a plurality of electrical contacts (10) may be seated in a connector housing (20) such that each contact (10) has a respective initial height relative to the housing. At least one of the contacts (10) is pressed on such that, after the pressing, each of the contacts has approximately the same height relative to the connector housing (20). The pressing may bend the at least one contact at least until it has set. Before the pressing, the initial contact heights have a first tolerance. After the pressing the pressed contact heights have a second tolerance that is smaller than the first tolerance.
