A pop-up rotor-type irrigation sprinkler includes an outer case and a riser assembly telescopically extensible from the outer case. A coil spring surrounds the riser assembly and normally holds the riser assembly in a lower retracted position within the outer case. The coil spring is dimensioned and configured to permit extension of the riser assembly to a raised upper position when pressurized water is introduced into the outer case. A cushion made of an elastomeric material is retained in the outer case adjacent an end thereof and surrounds the riser assembly. The cushion may be solid and may move between hard structures to facilitate absorption of the shock of the impact caused by rapid extension of the riser assembly to its raised upper position. The cushion may also include a plurality of voids that facilitate deformation and shock absorption.

A drip emitter for subsurface irrigation includes a valve chamber defining a hollow interior, an entry port and at least one exit port. A flexible diaphragm is mounted in the hollow interior of the valve chamber for movement in response to pressurized water being supplied to the hollow interior through the entry port. The drip emitter further includes a tortuous path water flow channel that limits the flow of water from the hollow interior of the valve chamber to the at least one exit port. A closure member is moved by the flexible diaphragm to open the at least one exit port when pressurized water enters the hollow interior to allow water to be discharged through the at least one exit port. A spring moves the closure member to close the at least one exit port when the supply of pressurized water is shut OFF.

The gear train reduction includes an input stage and a planetary gear drive output stage that includes a first portion of the reversing mechanism. A second portion of the reversing mechanism is located outside of the gear train reduction. The second portion of the reversing mechanism includes a pair of arc tabs. At least one of the arc tabs is adjustable to establish an arc of coverage of the sprinkler when the water flowing past the turbine causes the gear train reduction and the reversing mechanism to oscillate the nozzle back and forth between a pair of arc stops. The arc stops are defined by the locations of the arc tabs. The input stage of the gear train reduction includes a mechanism that allows manual rotation of the nozzle between the arc stops without having to back drive the gears in the input stage.

A sprinkler includes an outer housing having a lower end connectable to a source of pressurized water and a riser that is vertically reciprocable within the outer housing between extended and retracted positions when the source of pressurized water is turned ON and OFF. A nozzle is mounted at an upper end of the riser for rotation about a vertical axis. A Pelton turbine is mounted inside the riser for rotation about a horizontal axis, as distinguished from a vertical axis. A drive mechanism connects the turbine to the nozzle so that when the source of pressurized water is turned ON the resulting rotation of the turbine by the pressurized water will rotate the nozzle. The turbine as well as a gear train reduction and a bevel gear reversing mechanism are assembled inside a self-contained clam-shell drive subassembly before being inserted into the riser.

A Pelton type turbine is mounted in a riser of a pop-up sprinkler for rotation about a horizontal axis and drives a central bevel pinion gear through a gear train reduction. Upper and lower bevel gears supported on a vertical drive shaft are simultaneously driven in opposite directions by the central bevel pinion gear. A clutch slides up and down along the drive shaft to engage radially extending teeth formed on its upper and lower sides with complementary teeth formed on the upper and lower bevel gears. One end of a yoke is coupled to the clutch and the other end is moved vertically by an over-center mechanism to shift the direction of rotation of a nozzle turret connected to the upper end of the drive shaft. The over-center mechanism is tripped back and forth by a shift disc engaged by a pair of tabs of a turret coupling assembly.

An adjustable stator is mounted in the lower end of a pop-up sprinkler riser and includes a vertically extending frame portion and a pair of valve portions that extend horizontally from an upper end of the frame portion. A coil spring is squeezed between a lower end of a drive subassembly and a mandrel mounted in a lower end of the frame portion. The mandrel and the frame portion have mating projections which allow the vertical position of the mandrel to be adjusted. This adjusts the downward biasing force exerted by the coil spring against the frame portion and the valve members carried thereby. This varies the pressure of a water stream flowing past a turbine in the riser, and the speed of rotation of the turbine which in turn changes the speed of rotation of a nozzle driven by the turbine.

A sprinkler can include a nozzle turret having a removable nozzle carrier. For example, the nozzle carrier can be removably installed within a recess of a nozzle housing. The nozzle carrier can include one or more nozzle ports configured to receive sprinkler nozzles. The nozzles can have varying characteristics including flow rate, output range, spray pattern, etc. In some cases, a primary nozzle can be removably coupled with the nozzle carrier. The primary nozzle can include a body (e.g., inlet) portion having a first axis and a tapered (e.g., outlet) portion having a second axis non-parallel to the first axis. The primary nozzle can be configured to be installed in the nozzle carrier in at least two orientations.
