The golf club head described herein can have a metal body and a non-metal insert. The insert forms an entire toe end of the club head. The insert can have an offset surface, located behind the strike face of the body, wherein the insert and strike face form a gap therebetween. The insert offset surface can comprise a backstop that temporarily restricts bending of a center of the strike face during a golf ball impact. The gap between the strike face and the insert allows the strike face to flex while the backstop prevents the strike face from over flexing. In one embodiment, the golf club head can comprise a body having an interior cavity that opens towards a toe end. Toe-side and rear-side walls (2522, 2532, figure 19) of the extension form angles (2824, 2834, figure 19) with toe and heel extensions (2822, 2832, figure 19) respectively. A second component (2200, figure 17), which includes at least a portion of the club head’s rear end and at least one internal rib (262, figure 3), is configured to be coupled to the first piece to form an enclosed hollow interior of the club head. The material of the first component is denser than that of the second component.

The invention presented herein is directed to a back cavity insert for a cavity-backed iron-type golf club head. The rear perimeter of the iron-type golf club head and the rear surface of a strikeface cooperate to define a back cavity. The rear perimeter can comprise any edge or percentage of the perimeter of the back cavity. An insert may be placed into the back cavity such that the insert covers at least 60 percent to 100 percent of the strikeface rear surface area. When the insert is attached to the iron-type golf club head strikeface rear surface, it will interact with the iron-type golf club head strikeface when the strikeface deforms and rebounds. The insert thickness, composition, and stiffened outer surface may unduly restrain the deformation or flexing of the strikeface and reduce the amount of energy returned to the golf ball.
