Yarns and fishing lines are made by a process that includes the step of exposing an opaque yarn made from ultrahigh molecular weight, gel spun polyolefin filaments to a temperature within the melting point range of the filaments for a time sufficient to at least partially fuse the contact surfaces of adjacent filaments. For ultrahigh molecular weight, gel spun polyethylene, this temperature is preferably within the range from about 150°-157° C. The surface fusion between and among filaments imparts desirable handling characteristics to the ultrahigh molecular weight, gel spun polyolefin yarns and fishing lines that are similar to those of a conventional monofilaments. Preferably, the temperature, residence time, and stretching ratio at the selected temperature are chosen to provide a fishing line exhibiting a tensile modulus within the range from about 230 g/d to about 780 g/d with a tenacity of at least 15 g/d.

Multi-time delay power controller apparatus for providing time-delayed power or control signals to associated electrical equipment, such as computers and disc drives, comprises a power stage configured for connecting to a conventional power outlet, a D.C. power supply connected to an interval D.C. voltage bus, an output stage having a plurality of time delayed outputs and a plurality of time delay timing stages connected in electrical series to one another between the D.C. voltage bus and ground. Each such timing stage includes a timing means, and a normally open control relay. Coils of odd numbered timing stages are connected to ground and of even numbered stages to the D.C. voltage bus. The timing stages are connected so that the timing out of one stage starts the timing of the next-in-sequence stage, timing of the first-in-sequence timing stage being started when the apparatus is turned on. The control relays are actuated when a stage times out, thereby causing a time delayed control signal to be provided to the output stages. When time delayed power outputs are provided, the time delayed control signal energizes a normally open power relay which connects the associated power output to the power stage.

In order to provide an accurate sort into may different classes, objects are passed through a viewing zone and viewed at the same instant by a number of viewers. Signals from the viewers are processed to provide signals representative of the maximum, minimum and mean of the blockiness and symmetry of the object, and the maximum and mean of the convex hull deviance of the object. The signals, together with an edge-breakthrough count are subjected to a linear transformation to provide a normalised shape parameter which is then assigned a value of 0 to 15, for each class being sorted, on the basis of the expected occurrence of the value of the parameter in that class. Each pair of secondary shape parameters so determined is used to derive a decision value from the table specific for that pair of secondary shape parameters. The shape class of the object is ascertained on the basis of a majority vote for all the shape decision values. The tables are "learnt" by the machine by feeding a statistically significant number of samples representative of a number of shape classes through the machine.

Each such stage comprises an R-C circuit and a type 555 integrated circuit which together function as a timer. Included in each stage is a control relay. The energizing coils of the relays in odd numbered stages are connected to ground and of even numbered stages to the D.C. bus. The timing stages are connected so that the timing out of one stage starts the timing of the next-in-sequence stage, the timing of the first-in-sequence stage being started when the apparatus is turned on. The control relays, which provide voltage to the time delayed output stages are energized, in sequence, when each stage times out. Timed delay turn-off means are provided for sequentially removing the voltages to the outputs in the reverse order in which voltage is applied by operation of the control relays. A power controller (100) comprises a manually-on circuit breaker (112) having an electrically-actuable trip coil (142) which enables the circuit breaker (112) to be tripped-off electrically. The circuit breaker (112) is connected to a voltage source and provides operating voltage to a power outlet (124, 126). A line voltage monitor (116) provides a voltage indication (FH, FL) to a logic control circuit (118) when the operating voltage moves outside a predetermined range estab­lished by setting upper and lower operating voltage limits. In response to receiving such a voltage indication (FH, FL), the logic control circuit (118) deenergizes a relay (K1), thereby connecting a charged capacitor (C13) to the tripping coil (142) of the circuit breaker (112) to cause the breaker (112) to be tripped-off even when the voltage to the circuit breaker (112) drops to zero volts. Other signals provided to the control logic circuit (118) also cause the deenergizing of the relay (K1) controlling the circuit breaker tripping capacitor (C13). A logic control timing circuit enables the circuit breaker (112) to latch on when it is manually turned on and while the operating voltage is stabilizing in the line voltage monitor (116). The power controller apparatus (100) may include at least one switched power outlet (124) connected for receiving operating voltage from the circuit breaker (112) and includes a switch (122) for enabling the switched power outlet (124) to be selectively turned on and off while the circuit breaker (112) is tripped on.
