A method for increasing the temperature of a cooling fluid used to control the temperature of a fuel cell stack at a system freeze start-up. The method includes determining that the cooling fluid is frozen or nearly frozen, and if so, deactivating excessive power draw on the fuel cell stack to minimize stack waste heat and activating a cooling fluid heater to heat the cooling fluid. Once it is determined that the cooling fluid is not frozen or is flowing, then the method initiates a normal system start-up.

Ceramic floors and methods of making thereof such that the ceramic tiles are quickly and easily removable from the floor substrate and replaceable at a future date. A plurality of pre-fabricated articles each comprising a sheet and one or more ceramic tiles bonded to the sheet are laid onto the floor with sheet edges abutting, and the sheets are bonded to the floor substrate with releasable adhesive. The tile edges are set inwardly from the sheet edges so that a tile of one article is spaced from a tile of another article when the articles are laid. A non-Portland cement grout, preferably urethane grout, is provided between adjacent tiles. A plurality of pre-fabricated articles each comprising a backer board, a sheet, and a releasable adhesive bonding the sheet to the upper surface of the backer board, the sheet covering the entirety of the upper surface. After these articles are applied to the floor substrate, ceramic tiles are bonded to the sheets. A plurality of pre-fabricated articles each comprising a sheet bonded to the upper surface of a backer board. After these articles are applied to the floor substrate, ceramic tiles are bonded to the sheets. Each sheet comprises a plurality of layers bonded together wherein separation of the sheet along layers thereof is effected for removal of laid ceramic tiles from the backer board.

Methods and devices for illuminating a photoconductive switch consisting of an optically actuated photoconductive material situated between two electrodes are described. Light from a light source is coupled to an optical fiber, which is attached to a frustum, the other side of which is proximate to the photoconductive switch. Light from the optical fiber enters the frustum, spreads out, and enters the photoconductive switch via the top-side electrode. Some of the light is absorbed, while the remaining light reflects off the bottom-side electrode, travels back through the photoconductive switch, and any unabsorbed light reenters the frustum. The geometry of the frustum is configured such that most of the light reflects back into the switch itself with only a negligible fraction escaping from the optical fiber, which advantageously results in near total utilization of the light.

A dome assembly for a single annular combustor of a gas turbine engine is disclosed as having a first dome wall in flow communication with compressed air supplied to the combustor, the first dome wall including a central opening therein and at least one cooling passage therethrough. A baffle is spaced downstream of and connected to the first dome wall at radially outward and inward ends, the baffle also including a central opening therein. A second dome wall defining the central opening in the first dome wall is provided which extends upstream of the first dome wall. A venturi is located within the central opening of the first dome wall, with the venturi including a flange extending radially outward from the central opening, wherein the second dome wall is connected to the flange at an upstream end. A flare cone is located within the central opening of the baffle and radially outward of the venturi, wherein a substantially radial passage is provided between the venturi flange and the flare cone, the radial passage having a swirler located therein. Accordingly, a chamber is formed by the first dome wall, the second dome wall, the baffle, the venturi, and the flare cone, the chamber being in flow communication with the compressed air entering the combustor by means of the cooling passage in the first dome wall, whereby the compressed air impinges on the baffle, circulates in the chamber, and exits through the swirler. In addition, a circumferential row of cooling passages is preferably located in the baffle adjacent the flare cone and rows of cooling passages are also located at both the radially outward and inward ends of the baffle.

A medication dispensing system comprises a portable, securable medication cabinet which includes a programmable logic controller to provide for patient medication control. The system includes periperal components such as a transmitter, patient response means, display means, and a clock. The securable medication cabinet permits easy access by the patient to medication which is prescribed and dispensed logically. The securable cabinet restricts access by the patient to unauthorized medication. The securable medication cabinet contains a plurality of medication dispensing components, each comprising dispensing means, such as a coil attached to a motor positioned interiorly of a wall of the cabinet, to hold a medication package and dispense the package upon actuation of the dispensing means, with means for actuating the dispensing means. A receptacle in the bottom of the cabinet receives a medication package as it is dispensed. A door in a side wall of the cabinet permits access by the patient to a medication package in the receptacle, but a stop in the cabinet restricts opening of the door so that the patient may not reach unauthorized medication packages. The programmable logic controller accepts prescription data and accepts and evaluates patient physical data. The controller is interfaced with the medication dispensing components to select a dispensing component in re prescription data and patient physical data; is interfaced with display components to indicate response by patient to a signal entered; and is interfaced with a peripheral system to respond to a reaction of patient.

Process for heating coal oil slurries

PROCESS FOR HEATING COAL OIL SLURRIES ABSTRACT Controlling gas to slurry volume ratio when heating a flowing coal-oil slurry and a hydrogen containing gas stream allows operation with virtually any coal to sol-vent ratio. Controlling the gas to slurry volume ratio to achieve a gas holdup of about 0.4, and preferably 0.38, permits operation with efficient heat transfer and satis-factory pressure drops. The critical minimum gas flow rate for any given coal-oil slurry will depend on numerous factors such as coal concentration, coal particle size dis-tribution, composition of the solvent (including recycle slurries), and type of coal. Further system efficiency can be achieved by operating with multiple heating zones to provide a high heat flux when the apparent viscosity of the gas saturated slurry is highest. Operation with gas flow rates below the critical minimum results in system instability indicated by temperature excursions in the fluid and at the tube wall, by a rapid increase and then decrease in overall pressure drop with decreasing gas flow rate, and by increased temperature differences between the temperature of the bulk fluid and the tube wall. Appli-cants have further discovered that at the temperatures and pressures used in coal liquefaction preheaters the coal-oil slurry and hydrogen containing gas stream behaves essentially as a Newtonian fluid at shear rates in excess of 150 sec-1. The gas to slurry volume ratio should also be controlled to assure that the flow regime does not shift from homogeneous flow (bubble, dispersed bubble, elongated bubble, and the like) to non-homogeneous flow (stratified, slugging, plug, and the like). Although applicants have observed stable operations with a maximum gas holdup as high as 0.72, applicants prefer to operate with a gas holdup no greater than 0.68.

Optimum results to date have been obtained with Ba2Sr3Nb10O30, which yields a memory cell dielectric with dielectric constant over 1000 and a leakage current of less than 10-5 amperes per square centimeter for voltages up to 5 volts.

A surface of the dissolvable article is analyzed for surface texture using a three-dimensional imaging device to produce a data set that is representative of the surface texture. If the data set fails to at least equal a predetermined threshold value, the method further includes reformulating the dissolvable composition to form a reformulated dissolvable composition.

In a ferroelectric integrated circuit, a hydrogen barrier layer (128, 628) comprising titanium or titanium nitride or both is formed over a metal oxide element (124) to protect it from hydrogen degradation. A plurality of pre-fabricated articles each comprising a sheet and one or more ceramic tiles bonded to the sheet are laid onto the floor with sheet edges abutting, and the sheets are bonded to the floor substrate with releasable adhesive. The tile edges are set inwardly from the sheet edges so that a tile of one article is spaced from a tile of another article when the articles are laid. A non-Portland cement grout, preferably urethane grout, is provided between adjacent tiles. A plurality of pre-fabricated articles each comprising a backer board, a sheet, and a releasable adhesive bonding the sheet to the upper surface of the backer board, the sheet covering the entirety of the upper surface. After these articles are applied to the floor substrate, ceramic tiles are bonded to the sheets. A plurality of pre-fabricated articles each comprising a sheet bonded to the upper surface of a backer board. After these articles are applied to the floor substrate, ceramic tiles are bonded to the sheets. Each sheet comprises a plurality of layers bonded together wherein separation of the sheet along layers thereof is effected for removal of laid ceramic tiles from the backer board.

Ziel der Erfindung ist ein verbessertes Verfahren zur Erhitzung von Kohle-Oel-Schlaemmen und wasserstoffhaltigen Gasstroemen, d. bei minimalen Druckverminderungen eine effiziente Waermeuebertragung und stabile Fliessbedingungen gewaehrleistet. Erfindungsgemaess wird ein fliessender Strom von Kohle-Oel-Schlamm und einem mindestens 70 Molprozent Wasserstoff enthaltendes Gas in steuerbarer Weise erwaermt und das Volumenverhaeltnis von Schlamm zu Gas derart gesteuert, dass in dem Teil der Heizzone, in welchem die Temperatur des Oelschlammes von etwa 260 auf etwa 332 Grad C gesteigert wird, ein homogener Fluss aufrechterhalten wird. Dabei wird erfindungsgemaess ein Gasruheinhalt von etwa 0,38 bis 0,6 aufrechterhalten. Die Teilchengroesse der Kohle, die zur Bereitung des Kohle-Oel-Schlammes verwendet wird, ist derart, dass mindestens 80 Masseprozent ein 30er Maschensieb und nicht mehr als 30 Masseprozent ein 400er Maschensieb durchlaufen. The object of the invention is an improved process for heating coal oil slurries and hydrogen-containing gas streams, d. with minimal pressure reductions ensures efficient heat transfer and stable flow conditions. According to the invention, a flowing stream of coal-oil sludge and a gas containing at least 70 mole percent hydrogen is controllably heated and the volume ratio of sludge to gas controlled so that in the part of the heating zone in which the temperature of the oil sludge of about 260 on increased to about 332 degrees C, a homogeneous flow is maintained. A fuel cell system that selectively causes cathode input air to by-pass a water vapor transfer (WVT) device during high to low power transients. During normal stack operation, the cathode input air is sent through the WVT device to humidify the cathode input air for proper membrane humidification. For low power stack operation, where the cathode input airflow is reduced, which reduces the ability of the airflow to drive water out of the cathode flow channels, a by-pass valve is switched so the cathode inlet air by-passes the WVT device to reduce the cathode inlet humidification. In one embodiment, heaters at the ends of the stack are turned on during the low power condition to further reduce the accumulation of water in the end channels of the stack.

A process for hydrolyzing products with enzymatic activity remaining in peptone solutions after mucosa hydrolysis is provided along with a process for preserving mucosa tissue. Broadly, the processes are carried out by hydrolyzing mucosa tissue according to conventional heparin manufacturing processes wherein an excess quantity of proteolytic enzymes is used. The resulting peptone solution is then contacted with proteins or protein-containing materials in order to hydrolyze the proteins. In another embodiment, mucosa tissue is preserved by mixing it with a preserving agent selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide and phosphoric acid. The product preserved by hydrogen peroxide is low in ash, stable for at least a week, and has a reduced odor.
